Any special considerations need to be taken to reload for one of these ? I am thinking of using 43.0gr of Varget behind a 168smk. Of course the brass gets destroyed so I will probably use once fired LC.

Re: Reloading for a PSG1

I had to buy a case buffer for my SR-9, works great. It just snapped it into place, and no more jacked-up brass. I'm guessing that's what you meant by:

"Of course the brass gets destroyed so I will probably use once fired LC."

That gun used to put brutal dents in the brass. Oh, forgot to mention; I've never put a round in that thing that it wouldn't swallow.

Thats not the only problem the fluted chamber kills the brass and there is no fix for it.

Re: Reloading for a PSG1

AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! Say it isn't so.....ah man I've got a freakin ton of brass that i've saved up for the day that I actually get into reloading and you just pooped in my cereal bowl!

Damn that's brutal! I can remember seeing what looked like streaks of gunpowder running down the sides of the brass from the fluting, but didn't think it tore-up the brass???

Man I'll have to take another look at it. What exactly damage wise should I look for? I'm not kidding about that ton of brass thing.

Re: Reloading for a PSG1

If you can afford a PSG-1 you shouldn't be bitching about brass.

What we do is use old (4-7x fired) brass from other rifles knowing it is the last time that piece of brass will be used.

I have the HK-91 and despite what the others have said, you can reload the brass. I get the fluted chamber marks, but they're more cosmetic than anything else. This being said, you probably won't get 20 loadings out of them, but at least a couple and maybe a few if you can find them all in the grass. I don't really get the dents, BTW.

I'd check for proper, or heavier, neck tension, if you're going to be rapid firing as that BCG is massively heavy and you might get some bullet set back. I guess if there's one example of a cartridge needing to be crimped, it's one fired in the HK G3 family of rifles.

Re: Reloading for a PSG1

Thanks you guys,

That explains a lot. I haven't noticed any damage other than cosmetic myself, but I will take a closer look at each piece to make sure that they are in fact still round, long before I consider using them for reloading.

Thanks again for the for the help you guys,

Re: Reloading for a PSG1

I have reloaded up to 4 times for my HK91 with no problems. I use a small base die and they cycle just fine. But as said before I wouldn't go more than 4 times as the HK chamber flutes do "move" the brass around more than annealing would fix.

Re: Reloading for a PSG1

You can definitely reload the brass.

As for the flute marks: sometimes its just soot, and sometimes the brass actually flows into the flutes, and raises the flute areas. This brass you toss.

I've found with the exception of really heavy loads, the brass should be just fine.
