Gunsmithing Rem 40X Single Shot to a Repeater

So I have a USMC Property Single Shot Rem 40X 22LR and was wondering if there is anyone out there thats doing the machine work and converting these single shot actions to repeaters? Id like to get this converted, trued. Barreled etc and set up to compete in the NRL22 comps and local PRS type matches.

Although I do understand the collectability aspect, but given that some shoot great and some don’t as factory 40x I would have changed the barrel regardless.

I have had the conversion done, straight bolt installed, and the kreiger barrel.

This is probably One of my favorite and most used rifles.

Those are some bitchin rifles man. You’re coming highly recommended and will definitely be getting in contact with you shorty. I’m in a bit of turmoil over cutting up the one I have being it’s a USMC Property 40x, but at the same point, ill never sell this rifle or my return stock and I like to use my stuff.

In your guys opinion to younger the VooDoos have an advantage on the 40x conversions? I know prior to having the barrel, truing, conversion done it’s propbably not a fair comparison, but after the works been done, how do they run?

The Vudoos are nice and I'd never discourage anyone from getting one. The guys there have been good to me. People usually come to me when they already own a 40X and want a repeater. (usually from seeing postings or from Vudoo's reference), especially when it's getting rebarreled ect.. With the Vudoo you'll get a tighter fitting action that's new and feels great. The 40X will be looser fitting but also functions great. In the end most of the time a decision is made based on what you're doing to the 40X, what you're trying to achieve, and if you already own one vs having to find a donor. Some guys like the feel of the Vudoos more and some like the 40Xs. I encourage you to get behind them if you can. I certainly don't want to come across to anyone here that I'm trying to sell without a site sponsorship, but as far as i know I'm the only one doing this particular conversion and will try to answer any questions you may have.

Thank you man. Yeah, I have a 40x and love it. I’ve had it for quite a few years, and don’t necessarily want to buy another 22 when I can just have this one done the way I want it. I have no intention in EVER selling it, but I like to use my stuff. I’ve seen the VooDoos and they’re some badass rifles, no doubt but there’s something special about my 40x and I’d a rather just keep this and have the work done to it. I appreciate all the info, and I’ll be getting with you shortly to get this project going.

I found a USMC 40X as well and had every intention of sending it to Jonathon UNTIL...I did some research and found that there were very few 40X's that got stamped USMC, something in the neighborhood of 2800-2850 or so. While not collectable, the sentimental value is something I cannot replace.

Jelrod nailed this very well above. The converted 40Xs run incredibly well and I have to say, the conversions couldn't be in better hands than they are with Jelrod. He's been a pleasure to work with and we're continuing to support him with magazines, etc., for as long as there are 40Xs to convert.

I understand your struggle though and Terry Cross echoed some words I've had in my head more than a few times with 40Xs that were just too nice to convert. I either kept those as they were or sold them to someone who'd use and appreciate them for what they are. Other than the ones I converted for guys that sent them to me, I always converted the ugly ducklings for myself.

This is a cool discussion because there are some pretty incredible options and multiple ways to get to where you want to go.

Im a sentimental guy. I love history. I say keep as is and either find another 40x to convert or get a Vudoo for a repeater.

I have a huge thing for cool old rifles and shotguns. Like a good woman with soft skin who smells good. There may be a higher speed model, but it aint the same and it never will be.

I had Jonathan convert both my CMP 40X & XB a couple of years ago, and never regretted it for a moment. They were just taking up space in a closet, and went from closet queens to the most often fired rifles in my possession. I wanted to barrel them myself, as I'd just recently gotten into doing 22RF bbl work, but would advise you to have him re-barrel yours while he's got it. That allows him to tune the extractor & pusher to work with your new bbl, and besides that, his bbl work is as good as his conversion work - which is to say, excellent. I recently sold my converted 40X, but am still hanging onto the 40XB, even though I bought three V-22s....it's an addiction!
