I am looking at converting my Rem Gen1 5r, with HS stock, to take magazines. I've looked in the past and seen multiple conversions with different mag types but never knew what was the best route. Can anyone chime in and point me in the right direction?

Would it be a better idea just to spend the money on a new stock, with adjustable cheek weld, that comes with a mag conversion?

They can be converted by the home hobby guy with a Dremel and small hand files fairly easy. I have done the conversion using PT&G bottom metal and I have also done it with Magpul polymer bottom metal. The Magpul is the cheapest route and worked perfect for me. The Magpul is much much easier to inlet for because it has a slightly smaller footprint and the existing aluminum in the stock did not have to be removed as much. Take your time and you can get good results. The depth of the bottom metal into the stock is critical for feeding reliabillity. Read some threads on here where feeding from AICS mags is discussed and you will find detailed descriptions of how to get the proper feeding.

Attached are pics of one I did in an HS stock on a Remington Varmint rifle. Functioned perfectly.

Lots of places will inlet for an M5 print metal that uses AI mags. This is what you will want for the 700. I would probably sell the H.S and get one with the adjustable cheek and M5 inlet you want.

Send it to badger or whatever brand you want to be inletted. I have the same rifle I consider my budget build. I sold the hs and got a grayboe with mpa bottom metal package deal on sale. Running magpul mags and have no complaints with it. That rifle shoots as well as others I have a lot more money in.

Not a "home gunsmith job", But, I had my gunsmith install a Seekins DBM in a HS Precision stock just like yours, & I Love it! So much so, I have another ' In-Hand' for my Smith to install into the stock of my Gen 1 5R 308! Just my $.02 worth..... Idaho-5R
