Here’s the thing. A good factory action, trued by a competent smith, will be just as accurate as the latest, greatest action.
The problem is how much time and money you’ll spend to get it there. I’m running a trued R700, but I bought it used for a good deal so it was well worth it to me. If I was starting a custom build from scratch, I’d go with a custom over a factory action. But I’m on a budget and mine was built already, so I'm gonna run it, and I’m 110% certain the action won’t be why I don’t win matches.

Mine works fine, but after getting it "accurized", side bolt stop, PTG bolt... It's best to buy a custom action.

Neither. Recent positive feedback on the Remington 700 PCR suggest Big Green might finally took a lesson from Ruger, Savage, Howa, etc and have gotten their crap together. Not maybe to the level of The high dollar customs, but at least equal to the other factory offerings.

I had a chance to buy a TacOps rifle for cheap. It was at the gun shop on consignment and I went home to look up the gunsmith as I didn't recognize the name. As soon as I did a little research I hurried back, but it was gone. Ever since that day a Tango51 is on my bucket list.
I guess I look at it like this. A Rem 700 action is the bare minimum to start with. It has the most aftermarket options and with a certain amount of work can be brought to acceptable standards. The custom actions start where you hope to end up with a factory 700.
I keep hearing that Rem is making big changes in quality control right now..... so maybe. I wont be first in line- but if they do get it strait I will use them.
I don't really care if they add new features or make changes-- I'd be happy if they just did a good job on the existing design. This a Rem 5r from yesterday. No idea if the bolt handle is correct or not. It function.
That is about as good as I can shoot consistently. The larger groups are probably me. My 24" 5R I sold shot about the same. Sold it to a friend to fund another project.

Now the answer would be no. I wouldn't get a 700. If I wanted something 700 based then I would get a Bergara. I had some 90s 700s that shot well but seen too many complaints in the past few years to waste money on them.

They just look a lot cleaner than a lot of other options.
I do favor the pre 1970 models that have the slimmer, high nickle, bolt handle. Two of my 5 R700s are built on these actions a third is in line at LRI. All have been heavily "massaged" by gunsmiths even the "G" receivers one built by USMC 2112 and the other built by Remington Custom Shop.
They all shoot great!
My next choice would be a pre 64 Winchester Model 70 or a Springfield 1903.

Only 3 rounds groups. I didn't bring a cover for my can and it had to much mirage after 3 rounds. So had to let it cool down.
Why even consider it if its an option.... Would you rather drive a Geo or a Ferrari? I prefer the Geo cause it makes me feel all wrapped in a snug little blanket, blah blah, NOT!!!
Too many great aftermarket options that are R700 compatible to bother with an inferior product. Now if your budget demands the R700, it still works and can be upgraded later - in the end you have spent more time and money than the better quality product would have cost you.

Technically, you can't be a total poor when buying a Remington 700 for a precision rifle. Or well, you can be a total poor, with no idea, and have a shitty shooting Rem 700 too, I guess. So all or nothing.

Besides large aftermarket support, they don't really offer anything right out of the box that any other similarly priced rifle doesn't. If you want a gun to modify, buy a Bergara and have a much better overall rifle.
Oh hell that changes everything. Take my vote the other way (BAD). It's all in the barrel and the non-5R remington barrels are a gamble from 0.5-3.5 MOA.
It boils down to how cheap are you trying to be?

KRG Bravo $350
And you still need headspace gauges, a vise and a wrench.

The German is correct.
Go option out a top of the line 700 build on LRI's website. Around $1100 in labor and Cerakote.
Then you've still have an action ($300) a barrel blank ($350-750) and a trigger to buy.
Just picked up a 700.AWR in 300WM.. After conditioning the barrel i worked up a load with Hornady 178 ELD X bullets. Shoots better than my Christensen classic. Only mod I made was a Trigger Tech trigger.. For the price and simplicity I'm very satisfied.

I am 75 years old and have been shooting 40 XB'S since 1967. When a shooter purchased one (after a years wait) they receive a very accurate rifle! With an authentic test target, that was the real thing! Also included with the rifle was pertinent loading data. In 2003 I decided to purchase two additional 40XB rifles for local competition. When the 40XB's arrived they were a total disaster! Wrong stocks, extremely poor barrels, horrible accuracy. Returning the rifles did not improve accuracy and instead was given (I am being very polite) inaccurate information from the company. Bottom line: After spending a great deal of additional money, I had to correct the terrible bedding in both rifles. Also both rifles had to have barrels replaced with real match barrels. This year, I called the Custom Shop to get information of the manufacturing date of an old 40XB, which was recently purchased. The person answering the phone stated he never heard of a 40XB rifle. For many years, I was devoted Remington man. Never, never will I buy another...What a pity!
