Gunsmithing Rem 700 Barrel torque

Re: Rem 700 Barrel torque

Different schools of thought on that. One member here said he let the weight of the action wrench falling snug the barrel/receiver. I do that and snug it just a bit.

Haven't had one come loose yet.

Now, some real gunsmiths can tell you how to properly do it.

Re: Rem 700 Barrel torque

65 ft./lbs. minimum.
It's not a matter of the barrel coming loose; it's what is happening at the barrel / receiver thread joint.
Read Harold Vaughn's book, "Rifle Accuracy Facts", Chapter 6 to see what happens at this joint when the rifle is fired and in particular when it heats up after several shots.
I use Tru-Gard barrel thread compound. It works the best of anything I've tried. You can "feel" the difference when torquing the action on the barrel.

Re: Rem 700 Barrel torque

65ft/lb is what I had picked up in the back of my mind from somewhere, but I really didn't know if there was any basis of fact behind it or not.

Re: Rem 700 Barrel torque

This will be anywhere from hand tight plus a little more for BR rifles to between 65 and 125 ft. lbs. for a field rifle. One would also torque the barrel then release said torque before applying final torque.

One should also be using anti seize or you could be getting a false torque value and galled threads.

Re: Rem 700 Barrel torque

Anti sieze (copper slip or Tru-Guard)on the threads.

Torque to 90ftlbs.

Re-torque to 95 ft lbs.

Works for me, all are done this way.
