I have a remington 700 5R .308 that shoots very well ( It's a shame I can't). Anyway, I purchused it lightly used. I have a problem with the bolt being way to tight during the recocking phase. The cam surface was marred where the "hammer" comtacts the bolt. I smoothed the surface out to a nice shiney finish on both pieces and it didn't help much at all. It acts like an overly strong spring has been installed. What else can I look for? Thanks.

Re: Rem 700 bolt issues

seems normal during the rest of the bolt cycle. I tried another complete bolt and it worked fine. But when I swapped the bolt internals, I didn't get any improvement. It's resistance doesn't change without a shell in the chamber.

I'm going to interpret this as meaning the bolt handle is difficult to LIFT, after firing.

If the bolt lift is difficult (even with an empty chamber), try field stripping the bolt, clean the inside of the bolt, lightly grease the threads, cocking ramp and striker spring. See if that helps. Regarding difficulty, the bolt lift is going to be harder recocking the striker than just working the action with the striker cocked, that's normal, but if you have to use arm strength to cock, that's not right either. Also are you running the OEM trigger?

Re: Rem 700 bolt issues

i recently bought a new 5r in .308 and i opened the bolt as soon as the shop owner handed it to me and it was very smooth. here is where the problem starts. i got home with the rifle which i had a scope mounted at the shop and the bolt was locked up, very hard to lift.

i posted on the hide with many comments and none helped my issue.

turns out the guy at the shop mixed the screws up when mounting the scope.

the front base had 2 different lenght screws, longer one was to go in the back. after scratching my head for awhile and beating my head off the wall i decided to strip the rifle down and start over. i switched the screws around and bam, problem fixed.

its hard to say that this may be your problem but i figured it was worth posting. may seem stupid but it does happen.
