Rem.700 build advice...

First I am on a budget and I am not a competition shooter but I might like to try it out and I have a place that I can shoot out to a 1000yds for fun. Here is what I have this is not a hunting rifle its been a safe queen and I thought it would save me some cash to use this instead of a custom build...

Remington VS Sendero Special
300 win. mag
24" barrel
HS prec. stock

Remember I am on a budget and lets say for now it would be $1000 and I am looking to improve on what I have and be competitive with the guys around here (Bowling Green KY). I want to get the most bang for my buck so where do I start new barrel,trued action,new stock? I hope you guys can help and sorry for all the silly questions but as you can tell I'm a noob and all advice/suggestions will be appreciated!! Thanks Jason

Since the rifle has been a safe queen, you are on a budget, and it sounds like your only wanting to shoot the rifle informaly, if the rifle currently has the optics and mount to shoot to 1k yards I would shoot the rifle as is until you need a new barrel.

So give folks a unit of measure.

Your range is limited by the accuracy of your rig vs. the size of your target.

What is the average group you can produce at 100 yards / Meters ?

If I dont have a chance to check back here was my point.

If your gun is producing 1" to 1 1/2" or less groups consistantly, leave it alone and tweak what you got.

If your 2-2.5" plus, and you can link this back to the gun and not your performance, then maybe its worth a smith to look it over.

Theres alot that can be done with a stock 700 to produce some respectable work.

So take the pulse of what you got and make a good decison. I know I am better suited to spending more time shooting the trying to upgrade something thats not broken. At the same time a inaccurate rig will just fustrate you

Get a timney trigger. dollar for dollar, a trigger upgrade is the best bang for the buck, and you can instal the timney yourself with an allen wrench, needle nose pliars, a soft hammer, and a small punch (it comes with instructions).

next, get a decent scope. you can't hit what you can't see. i suggest nikon monarch; it's really a great value.

with rings, the scope and trigger will cost ~ $500 if you shop around.

finally, use the rest of the money to buy the kit and supplies you need to reload your ammo and you'll be GTG.

As LT JGB said, a good trigger is key. After that, you do need to see what you are shooting at (again,LT JGB said), Look long and hard at the SWFA line. Than look at it again. (and again, and again. etc.) Than do some load development and find a good hand load your rifle likes. Look for a new barrel when your current tells you it's no good anymore.(Keep a detailed log and that will all but hold up a sign saying 'THIS BARREL IS SHOT!' when its time to find a new tube)
