Rem 700 extractor?

I recently have my factory extractor fail (broke in half). Got my new replacement (factory I believe, from midway) and it doesn't sit in the bolt face tight. I know it's in the right spot but its able to rotate around in there. Are they supposed to be "floating" like that? I ran 20 rounds through it and had one case sit on the mag, not eject out. Could have hit my finger, I don't know.

My .02 is that it got bent just a little when you put it in, you can pop it out and take a small amount of the bend out and try again. It should not move around in there.

Dang, I think you're right. I'm afraid of breaking it if I do that. But it's likely going to break if I leave it as is. Ugh

Took it out and opened it up and stuck it back in. If anything, it's worse. You have to flex it quite a bit to get it to fit inside

It's tuff to get them in but there is a way to do it, been to long ago for me to remember just what i did. Put one end in and slid it around i think. Pull it out and try again and if you can do it you can get a new one and have it as a spare. I got mine from Brownells.

Let's start over. What size bolt face,308 or 223. The old ones have a rivet in them at one end, does your's? If your's doesn't have a rivet then slide it in from the left to the right CW.

My reciever was made in '88 and gun built by "beyond 1000". I don't think this bolt is original to the reciever since it does not have a rivet hole in the bolt face and the old extractor (broken) is the "new" style. I don't know when rem changes away from te rivet style, thought I read around '06

Ok that makes sense. I was having a very hard time trying to put even force on both ends to get it to snap in. There is surprisingly a very small amount of info on these. There is one video and the guy just kinda pushes it in...

After trying to reshape it I broke off one of the end "tabs"... It wedges in there tight now somehow. Hopefully it makes it through 40-50 rounds at match Saturday...

Ordered another (probably should have made that x2) will try sliding it in this time rather than compressing it to drop in.

I think you are going to get it done this time. Let us know how it worked for the match and good luck shooting. PS: I think the rivet was used in the 70's. I have a 3006 that was made in 77 and it has the rivet

I was just at store today looking at a new rem700 bolts to see extractors proper position and one had a riveted extractor! Brand new rifle! Was a .20s caliber. Looked at a 7mm of same model and it had new style.

It made it through the match (had really low round count).

My extractor is cocked off to the side, it's not in the proper position. its the only way i could get it to stay in tight especially after breaking off the tab closest to the ejector. I have several case heads seperate on 6x fired hornady match brass. I have never had a sign of separation. I have 14x on my win batch and not a sign.

Is there a chance that the bolt/extractor is holding the round improperly causing this? Will have my new extractor Monday, just wondering, pretty odd.

My screw up i told you that it went in CW but all my rifles are all lefty and that's the way they go. Yours goes in CCW

the extractor has absolutely nothing to do with your case head separations. most likely you are bumping your shoulder back too far during sizing. have a sako extractor put in your bolt and your extractor woes will suddenly disappear.

I use to assist in putting the trailing end into the groove and on the claw to help position the extractor. Alot easier than trying to use your fingers and you don't run the risk of bending the extractor too much. Then you can either use it or a casing to check your install to make sure the claw can move out of the way of the case rim and then capture it when the case is seated.

My fired brass is 1.621-1.6215 as checked with hornady comparator. I do my best to bump back to 1.619, I'll accept 1.620. Sometimes it ends up being 1.617-1.618. Worst case, 1.616, rare. I check EVERY case after resize.

your doing it right as .002 is about perfect in my opinion. I do know that one firing with extreme headspace long ago in the cases life could very well manifest itself now.

I just have a hard time getting it exact. I have tried several different dies. I'm using a lee o-frame. Could using small base FL sizing be the problem? (Both case head issue and bump back accuracy) I have a tight chamber. I've had problems with FL or neck sizing, difficult to unlock bolt after firing. The last little 1/4" of the bolt unluck. I'd have to grip onto the scope to open the bolt that last little bit. Problem completely dissapeared with small base sizing. Pac-nor 3 groove barrel

I am sorry but I cant give you an opinion without some fired and sized brass to measure and look at. I could see an oversized chamber at the web and a small base die causing enough fatigue in that area to allow separations. what does fired brass ahead of the web measure at its maximum and whats the same measurement on sized brass from the small base die?

Assuming "ahead of the web" is going to be just forward of where I was seeing the seperations.

First I measured just in front of where I had seperations .466, SB FL sized it now reads .463
