I have heard several theories of why the GOV wanted Bundy off the land, one is that they have found Uranium in the area and of course Hildabeast sold it to Russia. The other is the Senator Harry Reid was setting up a Chinese company for a large solar power operation and Harry was going to get a big cut if he could secure the land. Who knows

As usual, the truth is simpler and far less interesting. The state and federal governments came with some bullshit environmental concern, tried to buy out the ranchers' grazing agreements, and Finicum protested by refusing to pay his fees. 20 years later, the BLM attempted to act in a clumsy manner.
If I decide not to pay my taxes for 20 years and then the government moves to seize my property, I do hope it spawns conspiracy theories about China, Russia, and Democrats. Clearly, it's because Debbie Stabenow agreed to collect the nation's supply of diesel 4x4 vans and sell them to the Communists.
That’s a very long but interesting read that shows exactly how the overlapping government agencies can be used against citizens, and that they will do everything they can to not actually comply with Constitutional law to attempt to get the win in court. Thank goodness at least some of the judges in this country are willing to make them play by the rules.
The desert tortoise was the reason for grazing permit relinquishments. Before the relinquishments started and before the tortoise became an issue Cliven Bundy was already in a fight with the BLM. In that neck of the desert its all ephemeral range. The amount of cattle you can run depends on what kind of feed grew and if you have water. Bundys had more AUM's (Animal Unit Months, cow calf pairs) allotted to them that was realistic. They have a base property of 160 acres. In the ranching world that isn't even a decent feed lot. Unfortunately their prior BLM Range specialist happened to belong to the same church as they did and gave them ridiculous AUM numbers. Cliven got a new BLM Range Con that was going to make him adhere to the stipulations in the permit. Cliven threw a fit and quit paying his grazing fees. Meanwhile desert tortoise comes along and relinquishments were offered to the adjacent ranchers. They were paid hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars of to give up their permits. Cliven was in a pissing match with BLM, had his permit taken from him in federal court. Cliven missed his big payday. Meanwhile, as the other ranchers left the range, Cliven moved on to their old grazing permits.
Other Ranchers pay their fees, work with the agencies and graze public land. Cliven is a thief that is stealing from the American people. Taylor Grazing Act is a law that was enacted because the range was being overgrazed and people were getting killed over grass. That is what originally set up the US Grazing Service and what eventually became BLM. BLM does a lot of stupid shit no doubt but in general the people on the ground in these little towns work with the Ranchers because they are part of the community, and they are neighbors and friends.
This is the most logical explanation I've heard. Thank you. The court documents cover only the clusterfuck of the cattle impoundment and trial... nothing as to the long-standing who/what/why bewteen Bundy and BLM, etc.
The impound was an abortion. Believe me. You had BLM manager after manager that kicked the can down the road, retired and left the Bundy mess on their desk. After a court order was signed by a judge, BLM had to act. US Marshalls Service was contacted they said no way cause it was too far from the gym and the courthouse, FBI said they would help but left at the 11th hour without telling anyone when the shit hit the fan. BLM had an egomaniac agent in charge by the name of Dan Love who wanted to make a name for himself, rub everyones nose in it and have a big spectacle. His whole method was only going to inflame. He eventually got fired. The cattle impound should have had 4 officers max. They should have worked the edges first. Like the golf course where Bundys cattle frequented for example. Instead they set up camp in their back yard and pissed off everyone. If BLM would have worked the edges they could have impounded half of Bundys cattle without him even knowing because he is that shitty of a rancher. No calving season as they calve year round, never brings the cows all back to the ranch because he has no room on his 160 acre melon farm. If he needs some cash they catch some and take them to the sale yard.
