There is a Remington 540X for sale locally from 1969. He's asking $600 for it. I'm assuming it's a good deal, correct? It's in flawless condition. It doesn't come with any irons or anything. I apologize if I seem ignorant, I've never seen one come up for sale around here before.

That is a good price. I would not sell either of mine for six. Both of mine are shooters. Attached is a 50y 5 shot group I made with it about 3 yrs ago and another at 100y. Both are extraordinary examples of what that rifle could do under perfect conditions with lot tested ammo and a bit of luck. Typical was small clusters in the 2's at 50y and 1/2moa at 100y. The pic of the rifle was when it had peeps on it. Both tgt examples were fired with a 36x Sightron tgt scope in place. These rifles are capable of punching well above their weight and are a great value at even $1k if in pristine condition. The one that shot these tgts is very well worn and not at all pristine. Looks like it had been dragged behind a tractor. My only complaint about it is that it is very cold blooded. It takes 10-20 shots to warm it up to the point that it is shooting up to its full potential and if I pause for even 2 minutes, it will cool and require 5-10 more shots before printing well again. I think this is due to a very well worn bore. The other one I have was in near unfired condition and displays no-such behavior. If you fail to buy it will you PM me the contact info for the owner??

Just like the little Rem 788, which also used the rear locking lugs, the 540/541 series was discontinued by Remington because it was making the 40x look bad. They cost something like 1/3rd the price of a 40x and could shoot just as good. The 788 could out perform the model 700 also for 1/2 the price. Tough to beat. Ask yourself, "What is a 40x worth today?". If the price of the 540XR is 1/2 or less, it is a smokin hot deal. I see 40x's these days for $1600-1900. To me that makes a 540XR at $800-850 a very reasonable figure. Again, it would take a grand or more to get me to part with mine just because I know what they will do.
