Any hide memebers shot the Remington 5r .308 at a 1000 yards. Looking to shoot mine at that yardage in a upcoming class. My 5r shoots fine at 600 yards with all rounds on target. Will be using both 168gr and 175gr for class. Just want to hear some feed back on what to expect. Thanks

SIGTWO,

You will be fine, the 168 SMK's can key hole at that distance. So If you have any 600 and under shots I would us most of them at that range and less.

what base do you have? Does it have built in MOA or do you have a optic that can dial to 1000 from 100?

Winter time is the best time to try and get those 168's out to 1K . We used to use them all the time out to 1k when at our New Years day bash . Of course the temperature was usually about 4 degrees fahrenheit . If your shooting somewhere warm or close to sea level though you may want to use them 175's beyond 600 yards .

Re: Remington 5r at 1000 yards

SIGTWO,
I have a buddy that went to Butner with us a couple times last year with his stock 5r. He's new to the long range game and reloading. He only shot 155 SMKs, and much to my suprise (I like 175's ;>) they did pretty well. Just make sure you have a 20 minute base as he didn't on the first trip and almost ran out of adjustment on his scope at 1,000.
Provided Gerorge and the team come thru we'll be there in late January, might see you there.

Listen to me...." 185 BERGERS" try a box. They kicked the crap out of 175 Sierras in my rifle at 1000. Hands down! They work in 1/10' 1/11' and 1/12' just fine. 155 Lapuas were second best.

Re: Remington 5r at 1000 yards

Seeing that you are probably shooting in NC, you are most likely shooting near sea level, higher than standard temperature for most of the year, and in high humidity.

The higher than standard temperature and high relative humidity should give your ballistics a slight nudge; however, being close to sea level (Raleigh is approximately 400 to 500 feet ASL), you are shooting in denser air.

I ran a quick comparison of SMK 175 (what I use in VA) against SMK 180 and got what I expected. You are going to see slightly less drop with the 175. The energy is slightly less on the 175 and the flight time is almost identical.

I'm finding that the 5R rifling in the milspec barrel loves the SMK 175 at sea level and is most noticeable beyond 500 yards. Inside 500 yards at low altitude and all other things constant, the 168, 175, and 180 all produce about the same results. When I hunt with it, I use Barnes TS 168 and use my SMK 175 dopes out to 300 yards.

But, to throw my answer at your question; stick with the SMK 175's or hand loads of the same recipe.
