I am relatively new to posting on this forum. I have been reading about the Remington 5R Mil Spec for several months. I have not seen any real negative reviews on this forum about this gun. I have read several articles about this rifle and I am wondering if this rifle is a good buy for the money. I would like to hear from some of the 5R owners and their experiences with their rifles.

I have shot the 5R in the .223 model and absolutely love the gun and its performance. I currently own a Remington Model 700 VSS in .308 and also love the gun and the grouping I get from it. I want a .300 Win Mag for Hunting and some long distance shooting as well.

Several articles claim that the 5R barrels are not up to specs or they are sub-par barrels. Then I read about their fantastic perfomance and reputation. I am waiting for mine to arrive in about three weeks and want to make sure my money is going to the right rifle for the money.

I just got my 308 5r and it is way under moa. You always take your chances with a factory rifle, but all I've heard is above average accuracy, tight chambers, etc. I'm under the impression that they put a little more care into these than standard rifles. I have done some chamber casts of standard m700's and have seen lots of long throats and sloppy chambers. I say go for the 300wm.

I got one last year and have been nothing but impressed with it. The loads for it were easy to find accuacy nodes with 180's of any kind and also 168 grain bullts which I have been using. Actually looking to sell mine since I dont shoot it much or havent for a while. Let me know if your interested in a slightly used one at a discount from a new one.

for the 5R in a 300wm I am useing the 210gn breger match BT bullet.and will say that it shoots this bulle well.my load is 76.0 gn of H1000 with a 215m fed primer useing remington brass.I am all so putting the bullet just into the lands giveing me a c.o.a.l. of 3.700 at the tip.but will add saying the 208gn A-max shoots just as good as the berger does.so bullet choice shouldn't be too hard for ya.

so to answer your question.yes you have made a great choice for a rifel.all three shoot really great right out of the box.223,308,and the 300wm I mean.

Re: Remington 5R Mil Spec 300 Win Mag. ADVICE!!!

I appreciate everyones input. I am looking forward to shooting my first whitetail with it or maybe a big pig. I look foward to trying different loads in this gun and seeing which one it likes.

Here are a couple pics I have loaded already until I can find my camera to take more. The 2 target pics are during load work ups they were 4 shot groups thinking I could screw up one and get a good idea from the other 3 shots.

hey Gilly did you come to my place and take my rifel.looks just like mine other than the scope.mine has a Burris on top pf it.and yeah looks good to me.now you need to try the 210/208gn bullets with 76.0 grains of H1000.

Re: Remington 5R Mil Spec 300 Win Mag. ADVICE!!!

The barrels are rejects for the M24 weapons system at least that is how the rifle came to be in the beginning, if that is what Remington does today I don't know.

Re: Remington 5R Mil Spec 300 Win Mag. ADVICE!!!

+1 for 76grn h1000 and 210 berger that is the same load mine likes.I worked my come ups to 1000 and only shot 2 rounds to verify From 400 back but they were all under moa.A friend of mine put 5 under 2 inches at 300 with it.I have a brake from RWS on mine and I love it.

Re: Remington 5R Mil Spec 300 Win Mag. ADVICE!!!

I read a small article about them being a reject barrel in the beginning. If they are reject barrels and are prodcing these kinds of groups, then I am sure I will be happy with it. I also read an article that the barrels are made by Mike Rock but who knows. I know that the two people that I know that own them love them and they stack bullets one on top of the other!

Re: Remington 5R Mil Spec 300 Win Mag. ADVICE!!!

I like the stock they come with but many don't.the stock has a big palm swell grip.for me I do not grip my rifel I just cup the grip with my thumb pointing at the safety.so I like the stock for that reason.

Re: Remington 5R Mil Spec 300 Win Mag. ADVICE!!!

I have the 5R in 308 and 223 and couldn't be happier with an out of the box rifle. You will probably find things you want to change once you shoot it for a while. My 308's trigger would go no lower than 4 lb 11 oz, but my 223 breaks at 3 lb 2 oz, so the trigger on the 308 was replaced. The stock is good, but I have found that it is too low for a good cheek weld if you are using a 50mm objective or bigger scope. All rifles shoot differently but both of mine hate hot loads. They both love to be shot at least a full grain of powder below max loads. I think you have made a great choice for an out of the box rifle.

Forgot to ad, the x-mark trigger that came stock in my rifle is now in my box of spare parts.

It was pretty crisp, and broke clean, but it was heavy. I would guess the lightest setting was over 5 lbs. I put the cheapest timney I could find at midway in and have been very pleased.
