Is there any quality control difference’s in the 5R 300 WM rifles and say the Long Range or your find anywhere R700. I’ve got in mind to build a lighter weight elk rifle over time and wanted to start out with a 5R and as money permits change to a McMillan or Manners carbon fiber stock and Proof or Christensen arms barrel. But would like to enjoy shooting it for a while to build up and change stuff over time. Especially given that an elk hunt won’t happen for the next few years.

The actions are the same, its the barrels that are different.....if youre going to rebarrel it, ide just pick up the barrelless action......you can buy them from PTG for ~$350

I can’t really complain with the 3 700’s I have 2 AAC-SDs 300BLk and 308, and one 26” 308. All three shoot really well and are RR series. Wasn’t sure if the 5Rs were better QC’d than the lower end AACs and equivalents rifles.

also depends on the distance you plan on hunting. 2-3 hundred yards and a 3 MOA will take a elk.
you can ream the chamber sideways and 300 WM will hit a elk at 300 yards
if your going distance then its a different story

Well to me the idea is to have a gun that shoots 3/4 consistent or better that I can shoot long range as more of a do it all “Precision” hunting rifle/long range gun. Realistically the gun won’t be shot much further than 600yds at our local range.

i got ya,
3/4" groups in a factory 300 win mag is a tall order. if your using 3/4 as a number and you dont mind 1" +/- you might get a good one.
there is also a good thread going on about a do all rifle you can take a read as well.
