My son is thinking of getting one of these that a local store has but is wanting to know what people think that own one or have owned one.Not really much info out there as far as reviews.
It will be used as an all around rifle from deer hunting to plinking steel no further than 800yds(max distance at our range) any input would be greatly appreciated .

It's a fine rifle for your stated purpose. A lot of people go nuts over the whole 5r thing. I just don't see them being any more accurate than an AAC-SD with a good stock, and the 1:10 of the AAC let's you run even heavier pills.

I think they are a fine rifle, I just don't think they are Remington's gift to rifles like most guys seem to think.

I have the 20". Shoots well for me. I replaced the stock with a JP Enterpirses AMCS and added a Jewel Trigger. However, the Rem 700 trigger that came with it was pretty nice for a factory trigger. You can adjust it as well. Here's a 5 shot 100 yard group from this weekend. It's my 3rd time to shoot the rifle, and I have about 100 rounds through it now. I was shooting Freedom Munitions remanufactured 168 gr HPBT Match.

I have to say, I bought one. Shot it. And bought 3 more, over the past few years. One of the most accurate guns, I own, straight out of the box. I "worked" one . The others will stay" Stock". If you're going to "hand load", for it, it'll get even better. Out of the box, my first one shoots "almost as good", as my customs, that cost 3 times as much. It's an excellent gun, to start with!

This. While mine isn't exactly "out of the box", the one thing I haven't done is worked up a handload that she likes. Once I do that I'll be disappointed with anyting over 1/2 MOA accuracy. I didn't shoot mine straight out of the box before getting the upgrades. I have nothing to compare it to. Bascially, without any add-ons or upgrades, you could be at 3/4 MOA or better by simply handloading. Sounds like it would be applicable to the OP's situation.

I have the 20" 5R and it is a shooter. I also have the AAC-SD .308 and both shoot great, not sure I would have bought the 5R if I had bought the AAC first. You won't be disappointed with the rifle if you go that route.
My AAC now wears the HS stock off the 5R and the 5R got a McCrees. Both rifles have been used in comps out past 1000 and hold there own.
