Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

Re: Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

Good gun. I went with the SPS Varmint and changed out the stock and trigger. I like it a lot. It shoots well and the longer barrel has better velocity. I had a muzzle brake installed and it helped with recoil. I'd recommend it.
Its also a good gun to stat with and upgrade later. Once your barrel is gone you can have the action trued and a new barrel installed and you'd have an amazing rifle.

Check this out... it helped me when I chose my rifle...

Affordable, great out of box accuracy, excellent platform to start a build on, nice compact size, many customization options available, threaded barrel if you get the AAC-SD model.

Hogue stock is crappy and flexes in the front, just replace with any quality stock (Manners, HS Precision, McMillan, or the more affordable but still superb Bell & Carlson), I hate the new adjustable trigger mine has, it doesn't seem to give me the feedback it should after making adjustments, will be replacing it with a Timney.

That pretty much sums it up. I just bought one and I say a big +1 on the timney and bell and carlson stock.

You may also want to confirm if the $40 rebate is valid for the Tac http://www.remington.com/pages/news-and-...mmo-Rebate.aspx

I have both the SPS tac and SPS varmint in .308. Both great rifles, but my Tac gets more use just because it is much lighter and easier to pack up and maneuver with. Mine is in a m40 type walnut stock, with Redfield scope, so I can use it for target and hunting.

Same here but went with B&C light tactical for the Rem Tac, put a mccree on the varmint.

Just thought I'd add the AAC comes with the 1:10 v.s. the 1:12 of the SPS.

Same here. Mine shot good to decent out of the box. I tried every trick I could think of to stiffen the forearm on the stock, even drilled the length of the forearm and epoxied a stainless rod in after filling the barrel channel didn't stop the flex. It still flexed, so it was replaced with a B&C Light Tactical and the groups remained an average of .6-.8 MOA before bedding. After bedding and installing a Timney trigger it will shoot a dependable .5-.6 MOA with the loads I have worked up.

I just cut the forearm off close enough that it could not flex, wanted to keep the total system < 1000$

+1 on the B&C Stock. Haven't gone to the Timney Trigger yet, but it's coming soon. When I get the money it'll go on my gun! After putting the Bell & Carlson stock on my SPS Tactical, I became even more satisfied and happy with my choice and with the performance of the gun! I would recommend this stock to anyone.

Re: Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

One con I didn't see mentioned is the crappy finish on the barreled action. It's a nice flat finish, but it will rust easily. VERY easily.

You may have to paint it if you plan on hunting or shooting in any kind of damp weather.

Re: Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

I've been considering painting my rifle as it is. My wife thinks it looks fine the way it is, but she doesn't understand a man's desire to constantly improve on something and make it better. Either that or it's just my desire to do so!

Re: Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

i do not have the sps, but i have the VTR. very similar. I love mine. pros- it's a great weapon. cons- i spend too much money upgrading it

Re: Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

I went for the SPS Varmint...it's always easier to chop a barrel than it is to weld 2-6" back on. Mine is super accurate to date...0.192-0.35" for 3-shot groups is the rule.

When I sort out my priorities, I'll make some changes; first will be glass, next will be stock, then maybe a trigger. I'll have the action trued when I need to repple the barrel...in about 5-8,000 rds. I'll get it Ceracoted when I do.

For the moment, it's one of my four .308s that will get a lot of work.

I wouldn’t say the finish is bad, it doesn’t rust as quickly as blued steel does, but you do want to take preventive measures.

After yet another stock swap and timney

Also here is a comparison I post a few months back
<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Niles Coyote</div><div class="ubbcode-body">About two months ago I decided to find out what 6" of barrel length would yield with identical loads fired in both of my Remington’s, one 20" tactical and one 26" varmint. Here is what I found, FWIW...

Remington SPS Tatical20"
175smk 44.5 varget load @ 2.825oal = 2550fps
155 lapua scenar varget 46.7 load @ 2.825 = 2750fps

Remington Varmint 26" same loads as above.
175 = 2645
155 = 2850

So in my rifles you gain ~100 fps from those extra 6" of factory barrel. I also have a 21" rock creek custom that matches the 26" factory barrel velocities so it does make a difference on what you are comparing. The rem tactical gets more use as it just more convenient to carry and better balanced compared to the 26" and I can still knock the steel plates around at 1000 with 175's. If I were to build another 308 I'd stay close to 21" personally. </div></div>

Re: Remington 700 .308 sps tactical

Your finish must be a little better than mine. I took it deer hunting one foggy morning last year and the thing was rusting before I got home.

Until I get it Duracoated, I'll just use my other rifles during damp weather.
