I know there has been a TON of questions on here about this rifle but I just wanted to share my experiences and put up a few photos. This is a very capable out of the box rifle with the right load. I was experimenting for months and months working with SMK's (155's, 168's, and 175's) trying to develop a good load. I used mostly H4895 and Varget and just never got one I was happy with and was consistent.
I was down at Nosler recently and was talking to a very helpful guy who works there about my rifle and finding a load for it. The conversation goes like this:

Him: What length is your barrel?
Me: 20"
Him: What twist?
Me: 1:10
Him: What brass?
Me: Nosler
Him: Nosler 168 custom comp, 45.0 varget, CCI BR2, 2.810 OAL.
Me: Well that's pretty damn specific, you own one of these rifles?
Him: No, but just try it and let me know how it goes

So I go home load up some and head out to the range the next weekend. Low and behold I shoot the best groups I've ever shot at 100, 200, and 300. I haven't had a chance to go out to the 600yrd at my range but I will and I'll report back. If anyone has this rifle I would urge you to give this load a shot. Here's some groups (these are both 5 shot groups):
IMAG0468.jpg

IMAG0597.jpg

.6538" - .308 = .3458" group. I can pretty consistently shoot groups about this size if I do my part.

I've got lots more like this but you get the idea. I hope this helps anyone out who has one of these rifles. Give this load a shot and let me know how it works out for you. My rifle is pretty damn stock, no major changes.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

The load I found that works pretty good is the 168 SMK, Lapua brass, Br2, 40.4 gr 3031, seated to 2.210 ogive. I do have a 51 tooth AAC Brakeout on the end. Results are like you, one tattered hole. I just haven't shot it past 100 yds yet.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

5 yards. Kidding. These are all 100 and I wish I could find my 2 and 300 yard ones. All we're very impressive. I just wanted to post this to help people out, I know the frustration I went through and there is a lot of 700 AAC-SD owners on here.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Well I'm stuck shooting mostly FGMM or Remington Match ammo with mine, because the department doesn't allow me to use my own load! Now with that being said, I still have some of my own loads that I can go shoot with and I'm still playing around with some of them. Sounds and looks like a good load.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Good shooting and thanks for the information! My AAC definitely likes a 168gr. projectile better than anything heavier, to date anyway.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Topic--bookmarked...

Thanks for the info--I just bought a 700 AAC-SD on Monday (traded for it, actually, but it doesn't affect things--I got to fill out a 4473 so that's a good thing...) and have been reading a bit about handloads. All my reloading gear is in storage while I'm in school so I'm stuck with experimenting with factory loads for now, but when I get to move back with HH6, the .308 dies will come out...

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Thanks for the post mate.

A good buddy of mine is about to order one of these and apparently it's my job to work out a good load for it

you may have just saved me some time

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

super..I have one too. Anymore loads from guys for us to try?
(not trying to steal the thread but got my attention)

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Awesome info. I took delivery of mine on Tuesday, and have big plans for it. I put the first 20 rounds through it yesterday afternoon, and had great results. I used a some FGMM 168 that I had on hand. Quickly jumped from a 100 yard zero, to 500 yards. I will post a thread early next week with photos.

REMINDER: There is a $40.00 Rebate on this weapon if it was purchased between 08/01/11 and 12/31/11. It has to be postmarked before 1/14/12. I'll be sending mine off today. CKruse

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Also if you plan on hunting with it I made the same load with the Nosler Ballistic tip and it shot damn near as well as the custom comp. Here was the problem though, the load was supposed to be 2.810" OAL and I originally made my first ones with the custom comps to 2.810" OAL but I then had a lapse of brain power and loaded the ballistic tips with out changing the dies (and the ballistic tips are a longer bullet) and they shot extremely well except they were a little long to feed correctly. I have a seekins dbm on the way and type 2 alpha mags so that should allow them to feed correctly after I modify the gun slightly.

I think I'm rambling on and one here but what I'm trying to say is if you want a hunting load, load the ballistic tips with the dies setup the same at the custom comps and they should shoot pretty damn well. Just for reference (in case your dies are slightly different) the ballistic tips measure 2.880". These shot VERY well also. I think most of my groups measured about 1/8-3/16" bigger at 100yrds. Not bad for a hunting load!

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

are you using the original stock? i found it to be a little weak in the forearm i stiffened mine up with deacon till i got the $$ for a B$C stock mine would touch the barrel and through wild ones after 100 yds after i filled the forearm and made it more ridge i was tacking it very nicely

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

The 200yd one was definitely a bit stringy but considering this is my first "precision" rifle and I've only got abut 250 rounds through it I'm ok with it. Like you said more time will definitely help.

Yeah right now I'm using the original houge stock. it's definitely a bit flexy for sure. My dremel will be here tuesday and then I'm going to go to town on it and fill it.

I'd love to know the chrono results!

Can you point me at a thread or give some details on milling and filling the forearm? I just picked one of these up and while I like the feel of the stock I did notice that it is very flexible.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Have you previously tried the same powder charge and OAL with the 168gr SMK? Curious to know if the projectile is the difference all other aspects being the same.

Tonight I deprimed some brass for some handloads for my AAC-SD. I'll be testing the 168gr Hornady Match and 175gr SMK bullets with Varget, once fired AE or FGMM brass, and Federal 210 primers.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to work up to a few rounds of 168gr Hornady, 45gr of Varget, and the 210 primers. I'll probably also test moving the OAL back from the max. 2.810 OAL listed in the Lyman and Speers data books. I noticed with an unprimed test round with the 168gr Hornady Match set at 2.810 OAL was creating some burs at the case mouth when chambered and the bolt was sticky.

Thanks for the link. When I searched, I got a dozen threads for bedding the action but nothing for reinforcing t the forearm

Thank you for the heads up on the rebate. I bought a 700 AAC right before the new year.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Any thoughts if the weapon stock wasnt bedded correctly or torqued down evenly? You might want to check the how the stock is seated correctly

Also - try the Federal 175's or the BlackHills 175's

Also as a thought -

Please take a look at our chassis system. It will fit the Rem 700 and is quite an upgrade. Chassis uses AICS mags. Its the Gen 2 system over the Gen 1 system being used by the US Military on the M24E system.

44.3gr RL 15 with 175 smk in win brass and wlr. In my rifle I set it at a sweetheart skip of .030 off the lands and it's good for 1/4 moa very constant if you do your part. As always practice safety and work up a Load to your rifle.

Out of my stick average m/v is 2500fps. If you have an AAC this was developed with the muzzle threads exposed.

In my AAC, 168fgmm is good for 1/2 moa at a 100 and 175fgmm is good for 3/4-1moa at a 100.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

wow thanks guys for sharing this info. Makes for great load info on the 700 AAC/SD. I have read other articles with people pushing up to 200g and having sub MOA results out to 200yards.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Few questions to be answered here:

1. I never did get around to trying the 169 SMK with all other things being equal. I might give it a shot at some point but honestly this load is doing so well I'm not looking to veer to far.
smile.gif
I'm doing a 600yd shoot this Saturday morning and we'll see how it holds up at longer ranges.

Also I live in Oregon and travel for work so whenever I'm in Bend I stop into Nosler and buy all their .308 factory seconds. So that's all I've been shooting. Can't argu with $16 for 100 custom comps. I have no reason to shoot anything else if this round holds up at range

2. I did shoot 168gr FGMM when I first got the rifle and didn't have my .308 reloading stuff. I honestly could not give you an accurate answer on how well it shoots. I remember I did pretty well with it but it was also when I was brand new to this type of shooting.

I went and shot again this last weekend and did pretty well.

Re: Remington 700 AAC-SD owners read this

Here is factory FGMM at 300 yards with 20 MPH winds blowing dust and targets everywhere.

SPS Tac
1-12
HS stock
SWFA 5-20x50 scope
TPS 30mm low rings
TPS 20 MOA base

This was my qualifying 100 yard with the same winds.

This is my 300 yards targets ( This was the day my rifle flew off the bench and it weights 13.5-14 lbs!!!)

This was with stock 168gr FGMM stuff. I did get better results with 175 SMK reloads. I have a paper of a group I shot at 550 and measured out to 2.56". My rifle shoots really well for a stock rifle and I love that about it.

But than again the the winds were not 20 MPH like the the groups on paper above in my post.

I just picked up some Federal 150gr from Walmart and was hoping it would shoot still OK with the 1:10 twist so that's VERY good news!!!

I am so happy that I found this thread. I finally took my 700 AAC SD out for the first time. I used the load data suggested with both 165 and 168 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. My rifle loved 'em. Can't wait till my B&C stock comes in.

I gave up on mine. It would shoot alright about .010"off the lands, but was way past mag l length. I tried 3 different powders and 6 bullets and 1.25" is the best I could get inside the mag length. That's working numerous OCW tests and various seating depths. Nothing... I'm having it re barreled.

I had that same experience with my 700 VTR in .308. It is currently with a local gunsmith getting re-barreled with a Lilja and chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor.
