A remington .243 action will not work for a .308 build unless you change the bolt body correct? Does the .308 bolt have a larger face? I know they are both short action. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question. Just confused and have been told mix things. Just would like some clarification/education before I purchase an action to start my build.

The 243 and 308 both have a .473 bolt face. Look through your reloading manual at the cartridges information page, any round with that bolt face will work with your action.

Re: remington 700 bolt quest

Thank you very much! I knew the .223 was differnt but people were giving me mixed information about the .243. Bar stool gunsmiths!

Thanks again for the information and education. I love shooting long range and recently decided to start to get into the building and technical portion of it. Im pretty mechanically inclined so I hope that will help me in this new adventure. I have a strong interest in it so that contributes to my fast learning.

All your work is done in the barrel for this one. The bolt can carry over with out mods to it to make it work. If you step up to a WSM or something else "Magnum" then you are looking at giving attention to the bolt.

Re: remington 700 bolt quest

Speaking of barrels, I am about to get a custom one made. This will be a new post but what brand do you guys recommend? Here are my specs as to what I want.

.308 chamber. 1 in 11-11.25 twist 5-R rifling. 22-24 in length and I know some people will laugh but i really do want it fluted. I want a straight taper so the barrel is pretty thick. So far, my chices are between Kreiger and obermeyer. I hope I spelled that correctly.
