I was shooting my SPS 308 this week using Gold Medal Match ammo and I was consistantly have problems with the last round in the magazine. When I got down to the last round the bolt would start to push the round into the chamber but when the tip of the bullet would reach the feed ramp it would bind forcing the back of the round down. Then the bolt pushes over the top of the case and will not chamber the round. The problem only occures with the longer rounds like the GMM, shorter loads function fine. Any suggestions

Thanks

+1 on this, look closly at the bullet/ramp interface, the geometry may have to "enhanced" this can usually be done with a dremel type tool and the appropriate stone. go slow and check often but overall easy to do.

Take a look at the ramp and see if there are any burrs or nicks causing an hangup. Barring that, look at how the follower is causing the last round to sit. Bending the spring will alter the angle of the follower. If you want to tweak the spring, to it in the middle, not at the bends.

Gold Metal Match should feed perfectly in your SPS. The only time I have ever had problems with 2.80" COL rounds feeding is when I have not FL sized them and jammed 5 in the magazine. Then the bolt wants to ride over the top round.

Re: Remington 700 feeding issue

Before I did any cutting on the feed ramp I would check the mag box, spring, and follower to be sure these are working correctly.

FGMM or any factory round should feed without any issues without modifying the ramp.

If the box is pinched in the center it can interfere with the follower. If the spring is weak you will get cartridge tip and bolt ride over. If the follower is a stamped version replace it with a solid cast/machined version.

The spring sounds like in may be the issue. Because thats what happens, the round tips too far backwards when it hits the feed ramp and allows the bolt to ride over the top. Also the follower is just the factory sps follower. What do you mean by stamped and where do I get a solid cast follower? Also the spring is pretty much new, is it common for them to be weak?

Thanks again for you help.

If the follower is a stamped version it's easy to tell. Open the bottom metal and look at the bottom, or underside, of the follower. It will be sheet metal that is stamped into the shape. If it's the cast/machined version it will be a solid piece.

Doesn’t matter if the spring is new, I've seen new springs not work correctly? You can test it by stretching it just a little but this won't last and doesn’t always work.

If you have another short action with a medium cartridge you can swap out the spring and follower of the known good rifle and check it that way as well.

Also if the mag box is pinched it will keep the spring from pushing the follower all the way to the top.

Re: Remington 700 feeding issue

If the mag box is not seated properly in the action it can cause this also.
If you have taken the action out of the stock lately check this by removing the bolt, push the follower down and look to see if there is a noticeable gap between the mag box and the action.
If there is a gap the first rounds feed fine but on the last the follower slips into or catches the void and can cause what you describe.
Follow the KISS principle before you start modifying.

Re: Remington 700 feeding issue

What's a good source for milled followers? I have a .223 with the stamped follower, and it wouldn't feed at all with that POS until I took it to a belt sander and modified it.

Re: Remington 700 feeding issue

I did a little checking last night and I think the problem is definitely with the follower. The feed ramp is smooth and doesn't seem to have any problem. The mag box was not tweaked anywhere, actually it was loose with about 1/16 of an inch play up and down. I don't know if that is normal or not. Anyway I stretched the spring out a liitle and it worked better but still jammed about 50% of the time. The follower is up all the way, but the way it is designed it only contacts the action on the left hand side in the center of the follower. That allows the follower to pivot on that point making it easy for the cartrige to tip foward or backward. My question is where can I get a solid follower and is ther a more durable spring that I could get?
Thanks

It could still be just the spring. Flat springs can look fine but can still give you fits.
