I’ll try to keep this as short and sweet as I can. Growing up my dad was a gunsmith that grew up in the “Apprentice” day and age. His first two rifles that he built was a pair of Remington 700 chambered in 257 Roberts.

With all of that being said I have been rolling around the idea of building out my own version of this rifle but with newer more modern parts. With that being said, I have a few questions.

Can a 257 Roberts be run out of a detachable mag?

What is your favorite wood for stocks?

I am looking at running a lightweight barrel like a proof research, Badger Ordinance Bottom Metal (if it can run with detachable mags), TriggerTech Trigger. I want this to be a generational rifle that my kids can pass down to their kids as a deer hunting rifle.

Thanks for the replies in advance.

Yes, .257 Bob can run through an AICS mag. I recommend the MDT steel mags with NO front binder plate so you can seat at maximum OAL. Just get the .308 Win mags, and you'll be good to go.

Also, I would run 7.5" twist barrels incase you decide to run the modern heavy 133-135gr .257 bullets.

Proof is a great barrel, if you want to run carbon fiber. I run a 20" 7.5" twist Proof CF barrel on my custom .25 Creed build. Shoots 0.3xx-0.4xx 5-shot groups average, while still pushing Berger 133 Elites to over 2,800 FPS MV.

I run 257 AI and Roberts in the Hawkins hunter DBM with 0 issues. My favorite caliber. Please keep us updated on your build! A nice maple stock would look great. Or maybe find a nice factory high glass BDL stock…..

For a hunting rifle skip the DBM and the carbon barrel. You will be lighter with a light profile steel barrel and bdl bottom metal.

I agree.

Unless running a can.

Im far from an expert and seems like minimal/more repeatable POI shift with a CF barrel than a light steel barrel if you put a can on.

And, for optimal thread size, you need a flair at the end of a 2b or 3 barrel. So, a wait for a custom barrel. I suck at waiting. 🤣

The above is the only reason I have tried and am using CF for hunting barrels.
Otherwise my “slow” .308 tikka barrel shoots just dandy……

There is something really nice about a light profile barrel, blued (or cerakote to look blued) in a wood stock with BDL for a classic hunter.
I only have 1 like this…… ☹️

Below is an image of a older walnut SA BDL stock retrofitted with PTG bottom metal to accept AICS mags (6.5CM). Also shown are two rebarreled and reworked older Remington SA M700 varmint rifles (both 22BR) in walnut BDL and 40X stocks. And a 6.5CM built on an Rem M700 action in a rescued and refinished SA 40X stock (Covid project).

I have a beautiful old BDL magnum stock that I just bought that has too thin a forend for my next build that I have for sale. (I thought it was the varmint stock which is wider.) PM me if interested and I'll take a few pictures.
