Remington 700 R5 vs SPS with upgraded stock?

Hey guys, been doing some reading on a long range rifle in .308 for strictly range use. I've seen the R5 seems to be a sweet rifle, but I don't know after the $1000 price tag, I necessarily want to change out the stock.

An alternative seems to be the Remy 700 SPS, but from what I hear, you would want to upgrade the stock. So for the price of a SPS and then add $300-$500 on a McM or Manners stock, you'd be near the price of the stock OEM.

Does anyone have any opinions/recommendations/comments on which way might be the better way to go?

Thanks!
Aaron

Both options would be great. Which is the best? Who knows. The 5r's seem to perform very well.

Personally, I'm a fan of SS, so I'd go 5r. Shoot the crap out of it in its factory form, and then after a bunch of rounds down range, consider picking up a new stock. You should be able to sell the 5r for $200 easily.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I like stainless too, and of the 4 rifles I have already, none are in SS, so I guess that would be a plus for the 5R.

Re: Remington 700 R5 vs SPS with upgraded stock?

If you get an sps make sure you get a varmint model.

What I know is that both will shoot better than I can. My 308 sps-v with the factory stock(modified to free float) shoots 1/4" at 100 yards until I get shakey

Re: Remington 700 R5 vs SPS with upgraded stock?

Both of the guns will shoot. Many people report that their sps t will shoot 1/2 to 3/4 until they get tired. My sps t will shoot 1/2 when I do my part and sometimes it opens up to 3/4 to an 1in depending on how I am doing. i have shot several 1/2 moa groups out to 200 and I have gotten 3/4 moa out to 300. Have not been able to shoot past that right now. Mine has been in an AICS when I was getting those groups. I have it back in an 5r stock right now but it needs to be bedded. It gets the same groups as before but now it has some occasional stringing. Drives me crazy. It did not do this before when it was in the AI stock. My 5r was a shooter also. Before my buddy talked me out of it I had put it in the AI stock and it was shooting 1/2 moa out to 300 yards with 168 A Max and JLK 175gr bullets. It took me along time to get that one built and I told my buddy I was thinking about getting an AI/AE. He offered me a good price on the 5r with the AI stock and I hesitantly sold it to him to afford the AI. On my 5r, the bolt was alot smoother than my sps t. Does not effect work ability at all. Cleaned up easier also. I have since cut my barrel back to 18.5 and put a brake on the sps-t. It balances extremely well and I am sure once the stock is taken care of it will return to the 1/2 consistantly.

Please post up some pics, there is a SH target you can download where you shoot Five 5 shot groups at 100yds.

best goroup is was .25 at 100, that was a one timer. i consistantly get.50 when i do my part. and thats with the factory stock.

i have been thinking about epoxying an AL or stainless rod in the for grip so i can attempt to free float the factrory POS until i can afford an AICS(never). its just too flexibly to do it as it is. </div></div>

Not calling you a liar at all. Myself as well as others always are a little skeptical of the 1/4moa rifle.A rifle that shoots 1/4 inch groups is special indeed and in a factory gun it's almost unheard of thats all. Pictures are often asked for, no need to get all torqued up.

Here's the link for the SH group target.

Re: Remington 700 R5 vs SPS with upgraded stock?

Sorry I guess I took that wrong.

I know the rifle can do it. The problem is me. When I get it back from gap I'll do my best for a 5 shot group but will prolly end up with a 3

Re: Remington 700 R5 vs SPS with upgraded stock?

Thanks for the responses guys. Sounds like there's probably not a right or wrong answer. possibly going the SPS-V route with a stock might be a little cheaper, but maybe the 5R would let me at least not look back thinking I didn't buy the best rifle I could for a grand at the time.....

The problem is statistics.

Oftentimes because the stars align and the rounds strike within 1/4" of each other folks jump to the conclusion that they have a "1/4 MOA" gun that "will shoot all day long IF they do their part". It's kind of like saying I can get that quarter to land heads a quarter of the time if I do my part.

If 1/4" is the smallest group you have ever shot with it, you DO NOT have a 1/4 MOA rifle. You don't get to throw out the large groups and keep the small ones. It's an average.
