Remington 700 rechamber Q's

Hey everybody, just trying to find out about having my old Rem 700 re-chambered in .308. It's a 22-250 now.
Has anyone had this kinda thing done recently, if so could you fill me in on the details..?
It has a Beautiful Kevlar stock on it, it's been pillar-bedded, and the trigger is now perfect for me (ounces). It's a real tack driver, but now that I know how I like it, I'm ready to go up the scale to the .30 caliber round, along with a box mag. addition.
I currently shoot an M1 Garand in C.M.P. and High Power and don't really believe I'd gain that much by going to the .30-06 as the trajectories of the two are nearly Identical, but I was hoping if I stayed with the .308, the action would be close enough in length to the .22-250 to save a little work...
I will actually not be doing the work, a gunsmith will.
Any input here is welcome so please feel free to chime in...
***P.S. I just found the "What Caliber... Sticky Post" so I just have questions now about the actual work involved and may change the actual caliber, which correlates with "short action, .308 bolt face" but may be better suited to what I'm looking for. but input is still welcome... Thanx.

It's as easy as a new barrel if thats all you want. It all depends on how much other work you may want done, like action truing, etc. The conversation itself is pretty straight forward.

A fast twist 22-250 barrel shooting 80 and 90 grain match bullets will outperform the .308.

That being said, I would rebarrel to either 6.5CM or .260.

Find a local smith, order a barrel and have him install it. There are also several very good smiths on the hide that can do wonderful work for a good price.

( I'm an old hot rodder, and engineer, so every thing is easier to me in those terms)The action has been blueprinted (trued..?) etc. to the .22-250 round, so will changing the barrel entail all that to be done again if the current bolt face is ".308" am I getting lost in this and over-thinking guys..? I Just have to pick out a different short action caliber, and have the barrel "swapped out", and add a box type magazine. There has to be more to it..?

Fdkay,... It probably will out shoot the .308 in it's current form. As precise as it currently is, it will out shoot anything I am capable of, but, I am a fan of the .30 caliber round and it is just my own preference to change to a larger round. No offense meant.

No offense taken.

If your action has been trued already, there is no reason to do it again.

If you can have the same smith do the work, that would make it easier as some smiths will insist they do it themselves. (it is their rep on the line, they want to ensure it is satisfactory)

The .308 is a fine all purpose round. I will tell you this though, the vast majority of competitive shooters, if given the choice, shoot something else.

You are going from a high velocity, flat shooting cartridge to a cartridge with a rainbow trajectory.

FDKay, Ahh, I now see your point, and will clarify...
The choice of .308 was a jumping off point. I'm just personally looking for a larger caliber round and doing the footwork before the project goes further.
I apologize for the confusion I had created. I just think a more substantial round is needed for my intended final purpose. Am I making more sense with a little more clarity..? I know the internet is rough to gather a complete conversation from, but I'm sort of new to this type of thing. I appreciate your ability to be forthright, and if there is a "best" cartridge for the 500 to 600 yard range, I'm most certainly not being an ass when I ask to please explain further. I just simply don't have the background or knowledge yet to make a decision on the subject. I do want you to educate me further, and don't hold back... All fact begins with doubt, and I'm still in the nervous doubt stage... Haha...

I will agree with some of the other posters the 6.5 cal rds deserve a close look, they are far better performers than the 308 especially if you plan to ever reach out past the 500-600yd mark. The 308 is a great round but it just falls short of the 6.5's ballistically.

Yeah, unless you need "effect on target" (and that could be debatable) or readily available factory ammo (and even this is starting to be less of an issue for .260 Rem) any of .260 Rem, 6.5CM, 6.5L is going to surpass the .308 performance wise in pretty much every tangible way (drop, wind drift, recoil).

One place where it is extremely difficult to beat .308 is barrel life. I would not consider any of the above mentioned 6.5's barrel burners, but you'll still are likely to get 2-3x the barrel life out of a .308.

Guest1, the 308 is a great all-purpose round. Up until recently that was all I shot, had as many as 5 different rifles in varies shades at one time. Then I made the fateful mistake of purchasing a 243... I shoot recreationally to 1000y often and while my 308’s were doing what I asked that 243 spoiled on my first trip to the range. Not only did it shot flatter due to the higher velocity and the bullets superior B.C. I also needed substantial less correction for the wind. About a third less! This made connecting so much easier at distance almost to easy. Then I just had to buy a 260 and it is every bit as good as the 243 but with more down range energy that I deem important for hunting at extended distances, again due to B.C. and velocity.

The only way get the 308 to run at this level requires creative reloading with heavy bullets like the 180 grain JLK VLD and heavier.

The 308 is a great cartridge but quickly runs out of gas shortly after 800, the last couple hundred yards to 1000 separate good shooters form great shooters.

Wow guys, great feed back, I appreciate it.
The reason I wanted to choose a 308 (I hope I'm not opening a can of worms here) is because my AR rifle is .300 blackout and the reloading would be that much easier with a set caliber. Perhaps I was just reaching at convenience, as I have started to see that the 6.5 has a much better ballistics coefficient. and to throw away performance for convenience would be foolish. check this out if you get a second...

Hey guys, thank you all for the input, I decided to go with the .308, just too many irons in the fire right now and due to lack of time available, went with the 308. I based my reasoning for this mainly on 2 variables, Barrel life, and availability of ammo. I already had a set of dies waiting for me as well. See you all in the forums. Nothing wrong with that, just be careful... before you know it there number may grow all in the name of "convenience"

At least that was my experience.
