Re: remington 700 sps tactical

Very nice looking rig. Quick question. How much better does the rifle shoot because of the Choate. A buddy just bought a SPS and was shooting on my range this weekend. We shot over 100 rounds of different bullets, weights, and loads trying to find what the rifle liked. Nothing was under 1 MOA, his out of the box Savage edge was shooting better and more consistant. I surmised it was the barrel heating and expanding on the pressure point at the end of the stock that was throwing his shots all over the place. He's not thrilled that a rifle that costs twice as much as his Savage doesn't shoot as good. I suggested an aftermarket stock, bedding and freefloating the barrel will improve his groups to less than 1 moa, what say you?

Re: remington 700 sps tactical

I got one ~ a year ago from Midway... ~$230 if I remember correctly. Only downside I've found is the weight... and the barrel channel makes the barrel look smaller... Why do I always have this problem? ha. To answer "how much better"... mine is in the SPS-V, but it dropped groups (with Winchester Factory) from ~1.5 MOA to ~.8 MOA. Hand loads goes down to ~.5 to .6 consistently. (Have not shot hand loads with factory stock). To OP- Very nice set up, jealous of your range...

Re: remington 700 sps tactical

When i first bought the sps tactical it thad the hogue stock with the pillar bedding. I did some research on accuracy and i found out that a full aluminum bedding system is the only way to go. So i bought one from midway usa they run about 220 i paid 250 and got the 2nd day shipping. The diffrence in a factory stock and the choate is a good .25 moa! My sps with hand loads would group .75 moa at 100 yards. I installed the choate stock and my groups droped to .50. My loads was 44g of BlC-2 with a 165 grain hornady sst. The quality of the choate stock is great! I will never buy a mcmillan again!

Mine shot great with 44g of blc2 and a 165 hornady sst COAL 2.835. I also have very good results with varget powder.
