Hi guys.

How good is the stock that comes with the Remington 700 5R? I have a friend who is selling one and I was thinking about buying it to upgrade the stock on a Remington 700 SPS ACC-SD.

I don't know how much does he want, but what I'd like to know is how good is the stock and it if will be a good upgrade for my rifle. Do i need need to do anything to improve it.

Thanks

I have several. They are good equipment. You can bolt in and go with a nice rig. Much better on these boards, much more expensive too. You can be confident, all politics aside, this is good equipment.

I believe the stock that comes on the 5R is a HS stock. And the 5R stock is very nice. Compaired to the SPS stock, it's like driving a Civic and the getting into a 3 series. I changed it out. Here's mine.. It's sold, but you'll get an idea od what is will look like.

That's it. American straight comb type sporter with beavertail, three studs into the aluminum 'chassis' and 13.5" lop. Palm swell. Nice stock and stable, light. 2-300
The varmint, my favorite, no swell, two studs, narrower fore arm - no beavertail. Similar both.

Thanks. I might have someone do hydrodip on the stock only in multicam.

I really don't know. That's the reason I'm asking you guys since you know better than me. Anyone know the model of the stock?

I don't think they have an HS model number because they only are available on the 5R.

They are very similar to the HS Police stock with a shorter fore end 1" to 1-1/2" and with swell on fore end as well.

The 5R stock has a very thin recoil pad where the Police has a thick pad. I'm not sure if the LOP is affected by this I will have to check.

Yes the HS bottom metal bolts right in.....Very expensive!

Yes I saw that. Will I be better off buying a chassis like the MDT LSS for $399 that's just $50 more than the HS bottom metal and it takes the same mags. I have buffer tubes and AR stocks already. I will need a bipod but I was going to get one anyway for the other stock.

Cool. Chassis is a total different animal. Check out the AICS if you go that route.

You'd save a ton of money if you didn't need a DBM.

I am selling mine with the bottom metal for $200. I got an XLR element. Just mainly wants the HS stock out of the way. PM if your interested.

I think the thin pad is on the 223, thick on the rest. Lop is not affected, HS finished them all at 13.5" Remington supplied the pads to HS.

The pad on my 308 5R had the thin pad.
I ended up swapping onto the police stock to shorten LOP.
I have / had several and also spoken with Customer service at HS. I posted what I have noticed, they confirmed. Your findings are contradictory. No PSS in my inventory. My stocks selection cover 5R and varmint rifles both for more than 15 years.
newest addition thanks also to Joe Ducos;

Varmint type from HS , not a Remington take off. Same 13.5"
ETA; I like these. Obviously. Thin pad replacing a thick one is simple math. I still believe the thin pad / thick pad versions all have the same 13.5" lop. Was your PSS stock different Drum?

Yes sir..... Complete different findings.

The police stock's pad is nearly 3/4" thick.

The .308 5R pad is 1/4".

Both were factory new.

Remington 700 Stock Question.

The police is approx 1/2" shorter in LOP....
Measurements taken w/o pads included.

The 5R stocks are great stocks, both the current ones and the older ones. The build quality on the HS stuff is much better than the comparable B&C too. The older 5R's had a black with grey web stock with no palm swell and was the same stock used on the VS, VSSF, and Sendero. The current ones use a different model and are black with green web and have a slight palm swell. I like them both. Going rate is about $225-250 shipped so factor in $25 shipping and insurance and a local deal price should be $200-250.

Those things suck. The forend is useless and I've seen plenty of chassis guns running AR tubes and collapsible stocks that the stock breaks and collapses from the recoil of a 308 bolt gun. The fixed stocks on them make the LOP too long. Stick with stocks meant for bolt guns.

Thank you sir. I will do just what you said.
