So gotta ask here because I don't know where else to ask. I know someone is going to hammer me for asking an ignorant question but whatever!

I've got someone local to me selling a Remington 700 VTR .308 with a Vortex Diamondback 4x12x40. Says it has less that 300 rounds through it. I know the scope is meh' but I'm curious about the rifle itself and if anyone has any legit feeling on this rifle. Not a huge fan of the barrel. I was shying away from it at first but I was able to finagle the price down to a flat $500 for both. Honestly, the dude just needs the cash I think.

I'm asking because I'm new to the bolt action game. I wanted to build a rig that I know I'm going to love. IE: Rem 700 300 5-r gen II or something like it. That's going to put me back some dough when all said and done. PS - Trying to find a good place to just buy the barreled action because I know i'm going to chuck the stock almost immediately. So if you know of a place for this then would love to know!

All that being said, I'm new to long range shooting and could use the advice for someone who is still learning and doesn't know a ton about bolt action rifles. Is this deal to good to pass up to get me started? I'm only partially considering this because I wouldn't mind having a .308 laying around while I piece together my dream build.

Thanks in advance!

It will get you shooting. And to be honest with you, you are far better off learning on the 308 than a 300win. It’s cheaper to shoot and you are less likely to develop bad tendencies.

EuroOptic has some barreled Rem 700 actions for sale. A SPS flavor in 6.5 Creedmoor and a "Police" 5R (.308) barreled action. Great store, and awesome people too. (I have no affiliation with them)

That’s not a bad price at all if you’re going to shoot It how it comes for awhile.

If the first thing you’re going to do is strip it down and start replacing parts then I would go a different route such as a bare action or the barreled action from euro right above but... if not then get it and shoot.

I've had two VTRs. One, in 308, was no shit one of the most accurate factory guns I've ever owned, but I sold it because the integral brake does absolutely nothing besides make it loud; literally the worst brake design ever.
Had another in 260 that was one of the most inaccurate guns I've ever fired. It was pretty much a 2 moa gun no matter what reloading recipe I tried. Put it in a magpul hunter, no change, still a dud.
It's probably a good buy, just be aware that you're probably just buying it for the action and be prepared to rebarrel it.

The 700 VTR was my first rifle, given to me from my Dad. It is the older model, no rail, green stock. It is a good rifle. Mine shoots .80 MOA and always has. I have grown with it, shot my first deer with it, and shoot it out to 500. Until I got bit by the LR bug. So now I'm building a full custom gun, but only because I cant justify myself in taking apart the rifle my Dad gave me. Lol.

It should be fine. You will want to eventually have a normal barrel and thread it, and will want to ditch the stock, and I would recommend a better trigger sooner than later. 500 is what I would sell that rifle for, with scope.

If you're really wanting to get a rig you're going to like for the long range game, I would buy one of those new Mack Bros actions for $500 and change and build from there.
