So I had a buddy just got a Remington 721 its in great shape heck you would think its brand new. He dropped it off to have me get it ready for a hunt this weekend just one problem there are no holes drilled for the back scope mount they are there for the front and the back side mount but no top rear. I know I'm going to have someone put some in for me but is there any option with the rear side that are there I will post pics when I get them.

Re: remington 721 help

I wouldn't drill it...lots of folks collect those early remmys. If it's all original you could sell it off for enough to buy a new 700. They do make for a damn fine custom build if you get ahold of one that's been prebutchered though..

Re: remington 721 help

The only really collectable Remington bolt guns at this time are the 30 and 720. Maybe the 725. Your friends 721 has already been drilled and tapped for the rear side style mount, so your friend shouldn't be too concerned with saving it as a collectable.

Added:

There are older mounts, Weaver I believe, that screw into the side and come over the top. It also seems to me that I had a scope on an old rifle at one time, that the front was on top and the rear was on the side as you describe, but it was a one piece.

Every 721/722 and all 700's, 40-X etc were drilled and tapped for sidemount aperature sights up into at least the A prefix receivers, so early 70's for sure! I have a C prefix which is later 80's that is but suspect it was either sent back or done independently.

Re: remington 721 help

Well I dropped it off last night with a smith here in town to get it drilled. Although it got me wondering if I have done the right thing because it is old enough there is no numbers but it doesn't have the original stock. So I realize there is some collectable value but having it drilled will it hurt it not having the original stock.

Re: remington 721 help

Without the original stock the collector value drops significantly, drilled and tapped on top takes a little more..but it's a damn fine action to build off of and if the original trigger is intact it should be worn in butter smooth by now! Good luck with it!
