Hello everyone, let me start by saying I am new to the rifle world, and to this site. ^_^

I recently went on a rifle hunt, I shot quite a few of them and the one that I landed on and eventually bought was the Remington 770 7mm mag. I like the rifle despite the kicking like a mule. I was wondering peoples opinions about it, and I was wondering would anyone put this rife under the term, "sniper rifle."

Before i actually get an answer, please note that this is a simple and easy question and im not really hoping for a bunch of lame this guy is stupid type of answers which i have a feeling im going to get.

Thank you

Re: Remington 770

Ok, here is your simple answer:

Do a search, the 770 isn't fit to be called a precision rifle, a long range tactical rifle, or even a sniper rifle. Just curious in order to help you get more accurate answers to your question, how do you define a 'sniper rifle' ??

Re: Remington 770

I think it is fine for a hunting rifle, and will serve well for that purpose, but not gonna cut it as a tactical/long range type gun. There are too many small problems with how it is assembled and parts used to make it into a "sniper rifle". Your not lame, welcome to the Hide

Re: Remington 770

Welcome!

I don't own any 770s so i'll let those guys speak. I'm pretty sure the 700 is the go-to remington action though. Any rifle can shoot 1MoA if you work at it. So just have fun.

Well, I have no actual definition for it, which is why I'm here in the first place. I know nothing about rifles, and I would like to learn more about them. I mean, I've got people at work who have seen my rifle and say stuff like, "oh man you have yourself a badass weapon there" and, "Oh you've got yourself a real sniper rifle now." Now personally, I don't know any better, which is why I'm asking you guys. I mean i can look stupid forever thinking that I have a "sniper rifle" or I can look pretty dumb for a few minutes to a bunch of people on a forum about the topic while trying to learn about the topic. I'm not looking for stupid answers or anything of the like, I just want someone to tell me, "no, it can't and never will be something of a sniper rifle," or maybe, "well if you put the money and time into it, something could come of it", or even better, "here's some information, some things that we have learned that we can give you to go and learn all about the subject and what rifles, optics, bullets, etc, that it deals with."

Sorry to sound stupid but like I said, I'm new to the rifle world.

Thank you very much for the welcome ^_^

Re: Remington 770

Look at GAP, or Tac Ops, or many of the other smiths around here and Sniper Central if you want to see "sniper rifles". In theory any rifle could be a sniper rifle, by the way. It is not the rifle itself but how it is used

Re: Remington 770

Got a 770, for my aunt and others, in .243 it's a cheeply built gun period.

That being said, i tuned the trigger myself and got it sighted in and at 150 yards it shoots a 1" group with quality amo. so it serves it's purpose as my loaner gun for people who don't have a rifle to hunt with.

If you wanted to get everything you could out of it you could do a bed job and maybe fill the butt stock with resin but that would be about it.

good luck and keep shoot'n

Re: Remington 770

The 770 has been discussed here in the past. You will need to search for it with an asterix at the end (ie. 770*) so you can get results. A real world sniper is going to be looking for a system that is reliable and accurate. I think the preference is the Remington 700, and typically in the .308 or 7.62x51 NATO chambering. I think the 770 may be a decent rifle for hunting and the like, but if you are seriously wanting to get into long range shooting, there are many other better options out there. Savage makes a great start rifle as well as FN. Welcome to the 'hide.

Re: Remington 770

Doesn't have to be a sniper rifle to shoot well.

This is my ONLY bolt gun at the moment:

.270 Win (Not a "Sniper" round)
Hunter-Profile barrel (Not a "Sniper" heavy Barrel)

But I have fun with it and that's what counts... unless you actually have to use it in a Life v death scenario.

Re: Remington 770

I think the general sentiment is to ixnay the ipersnay talk, unless that is what you do for a living, as it is overused, incorrectly ascribed, and serves to add momentum to assholes who want to use any negative connotation they can create to justify confiscatation of the offending weapon style du jour.

What you have is a bolt action rifle. It happens that it is not one used by professional marksmen. It is however a perfectly suitable hunting rifle and, if informal target practice is your goal, it may be fine as well.
