Heard some mixed reviews on the new 1700 f/s steel load from Remington, so I thought I'd pick up a few boxes and give it a try.
We see both ducks and Canada Geese in our area of the Platte River and lake here in Colorado, so I used 3 1/2" BB in the HyperSonic. It was $26.99 per box of 25 in town.
Birds were pretty active today, and we decided to do a 1/2 day Christmas Eve hunt. Set up was a dozen floating ducks and eight Big Foot geese on the ice shelf.
The first duck killed was a Gadwall drake, he was crossing at 30+ yards going into the decoys. I had heard you can almost eliminate your lead, so I held on his bill, one shot, folded right up. Next duck was a shoveler, she had landed in the spread. We flushed her and made a one shot kill on her too. She was shot at 20 yards.
The geese were two greater Canadas. The were shot at 35 ish yards. One died clean, and the other was shot through the wing. One more shot took care of him.
They were all shot out of a Nova with a 28" bbl. Some crude patterning showed that these shoot really tightly through a stock Mod choke.
Recoil was a stiff as any 3 1/2" load, but not as bad a some of the reports out there. Follow up shots were fine, infact I got a double on the geese. Noise was not any louder than anything else we shot.
I am really happy with the results of this load. It took out a lot of lead, I am glad I heeded that advice. I will be buying these again for our future hunts!
