Remington model 700 SS 5r milspec

I just got a 5R in .308. Dialed the trigger as light as it would go, bedded it, and stuck a Leupy M5 8.5x25-50 on a 20 MOA rail. Three round groups will touch if I don't drink much coffee at 200. I'm not much of a shooter, so I think it's a pretty good firearm. Thinking about a .300 WM.

Did you shot it before you bedded it? I ask because I would like to bed mine and would like to know if you saw a big different before and after bedding.

My .300 win mag 5r mil spec is one of the damnedest shooting "factory " rifles I've ever owned. I didn't even bed it. Just put good glass, a badger 20 moa rail and rings , a Jewell trigger , and a Thruster break. It hits my 1,000 yard plates so easy it's boring.

I'm just getting into the long range game, I have a 24" .308 700 5-R. Specs say its a 11.25 twist.

Could someone help me out on the best sized round that I should be sending down the tube for the 100-500yd range?

If my other research is correct, this is built around the 175gr SMK. Is this truly the optimum round to use or should I be using the 168gr or a 150gr?

Any advice would be great.

I'd go with the 155 scenar or the 168 smk or amax. With the 155, it'll be flatter but you'll be burning your bbl out faster. ( I know it's a 5,000 rnd bbl... Just saying) but the 168's were basically designed for 600 yard or closer shooting. But I'd shoot a few bullets I.e. the 168 amax smk, the 178 amax , 175 smk , maybe even the 155 amax. See what your rifle likes and go from there.

Can't beat a 5R for a non custom gun. It's great to build on.

So far my 5R 24” loves the 168 Nosler Custom competition over 43.2gr of Varget. I was able to hit an apple at 600yds. I’m still working out different brass and primers. Next I’m going to work up a load with Burger’s 168’s & 175’s for hunting. I’d like to bed it, not sure it will make it so much better. Anybody shot this rifle before and after bedding? If so, how was the different?
