I am new to the long range group, but I am thinking about the Remington R5, .308

Basically, I am looking for the best route to take when buying a new sniper. My shooting habits are as follows.

Shooting 99% just at target
Will be only using hand loads
range I am seeking is 200-800 yd range
want to start cheap and work up
Looking to add suppressor next, and have it fit my AR

Define cheap.

5R is a good starter rifle, but most can’t just stop there so if you plan on upgrading later you might want to look at just starting at the top and get it over with.

I don’t recommend threading the .308 barrel 1/2x28 for your AR can. Standard .308 threads and cans are 5/8x24

I want to start in the $500-$600 range. I don't mind waiting on getting additional parts, stock, scope, bolt etc. I just want to get the ball rolling.

If I can start with a complete, less expensive 700, then I will and just shoot the piss out of it until I am ready to upgrade.

Sure you can do that. There is 1/2x28 to 5/8x24 adapters out there but you're not going to want to thread the .308 barrel 1/2x28.

Problem is upgrading one thing requires other work to be done. For example you just can't buy a heavier barrel and screw it on without a mod to the current stock or an entirely new stock. One thing always requires another.
