Re: Remington vs Savage Action
Owning a few Savages and owning a shrinking collection or Remington 700 actions, this is what I think.
Trigger. The Savage AccuTrigger is pretty nice out of the box. The Remington trigger can become nice, if handed over to a competent smith. The Remington 700 trigger worked over by George is one of the best (for my taste) I ever tried.
Smoothness. They vary from action to action, but IMO they're on the same boilerplate. The new Savage Target Action is pretty darn smooth, way better of all the other stock Remington and Savage actions I tried.
Feeding. I've been told (none of mine did) some Savage can have feeding problems, but this is AFAIK not an action problem. A five minutes DIY fix to the bottom metal is known to have fixed those feeding problems. None of the Remington I tried had feeding problems.
DIY barrel change. This is IMO a great feature. For the ones that consider the action cost of ownership, consider what three trips to a smith for a barrel swap costs, on an M700.
Accuracy. IMO is what sits in front of the action that is responsible for a very large part of the accuracy. In my experience they both vary from rifle to rifle, with average pretty good accuracy in both cases.
Availability. You can go buy a Savage action, and start from there. For Remington, thanks to the new company policy, you have to chase cheap used (or even new) rifles, and throw away everything but the action.
This is why I'm now left with only one Remington action, with the other M700 footprint ones, being the better built "clones" like Templar, Pierce & Co.
For $800-900 you can get an action that is better build, need no trueing, better fit & finish, and no more bid races on GunBroker
