Remmington 700r5 and 147g ammo

I took my new Remington to the range today to sight in the scope but it seemed like it had a wandering zero. I was using Aussie F4 ball ammo which is only 147g. I setup a target at 100 yards which I could not hit consistantly. I set up a target at 25 yards to check my sanity and although the group was not on target or tight i still made it somewhat consistently.

The only thing I could think of is that the ammo was not suited to the rifle @147g is that too light for the 26 inch barrel and twist?

Any help would be great.

I shoot 150s, all the time, for sight in, and fun. What kind of scope ? What kind of rings? Check your base.Did ya use "thread lock", on every screw? I "lock down, on sand bags", for sight in. Did you do this, or shoot off a pod? My info, is this: use "junk ammo", to get close. Use match ammo,or reloads, to "get her perfect". I took my "new" 223 5R to the range, with some PMC fodder. 3 shots, got me to the bull, at 50 Yds. Moved to the 100, and got to 1 1/2" groups, in 30 shots. It was a little windy. Now I'll "work up a load", and dial her in. At least I know she's shooting "straight", with factory fodder.Watch out for "surplus" stuff. It can be "all over the place". Use the sand bags, to help make sure it's not" you", making it all over the place. I have 3 308 5Rs. they all shoot 1 to 1 1/2, at 100, with Winchester 150s, $10 box ammo{bought last summer}.With my handloads, they do MUCH better. With the "cheap surplus stuff", they go to 2-3.

I have a couple different 147 FMJ cartridges; Freedoms Munitions once fired reloads, Portuguese Battle rounds, Prvi 147 FMJ.
None of it has shot accurately (better than 2-3 MOA).
Still, it does group, if you consider 5 shots within a 2-3" circle @ 100 yards a group.
I would check your rail screws and rings.

Forgot to mention. I loaded some 125 Gr. spitzers, for my 5R, and they shot into a 1" group, at 100, on the first "loading". Just pulled a load, out of the book, to try. I don't think your problem is bullet weight.

The problem with cheap ammo is not the weight of the bullet, it is the construction of the bullet and (lack of) jacket uniformity, which makes them fly erratically.

SMKs, AMAXs, etc., are manufactured with very uniform lead cores and jackets so that the physical centerline of the bullet is coincident with the center of gravity; when one of these bullets exits the barrel, it doesn't start wobbling like the mass produced bullet in most ball ammo.

And Scudzuki sheds more light , on your problem. I was "thinking about" the load,brass, and "manufacturing", of "cheap surplus". Yeah, they use "cheap bullets", too. Those 125s, were Sierra's. They make a nice bullet. I think the SMKs out shoot the AMAXs, "personally".

Never seen a 5r that couldn't hold on paper with any factory round, even ball. Check everything else on the gun, scope rings, ect, than re-zero it starting at 25. See if it wasn't action screws, or a bad scope to gun fit. Also, what scope are you using? Chance that's the problem? Buy some other ammo too, just to check against. Hopefully you get it squared away.

Don't shoot that ammo. Try match quality ammo before changing the many other variables.

My 5R was sighted in with 150 grain bullets and the groups sucked. Dd this only to get the rifles on paper and somewhat close to hitting its mark

i switched to 175 grain hand loads and it shoots around 1/2 moa

My 5r with 147 ball was around 3 inches at 100, so yours not being able to hold on paper tells me something was wrong. After that black hills and GMM are half MOA. Handloads really show what a laser that the 5r can be, and not every rifle out of the factory will be like that. Sometimes, Remington just has a rifle that will flat out shoot out of the box, and mine was like that. If I do my part, factory match can be under .5 at 100, and handloads in the .3's.
