Removing a Thruster brake?

Guys, looking to remove my thruster to check thread pitch for as a host for a TBAC 30p-1. Should I take it to a smith, or clamp it down and go for it? Or is this permanently on there?

GAP/Surgeon, 24" bartlein fluted, with thruster.

If you can't remove it with your hand, they may have used loc tite. You need to apply some heat and then use a piece of leather and adjustable pliers or put a screw driver through the ports.

Should come right off.

Hmm.. Never even tried to do it by hand. Guess can't hurt.

I'd use a strap wrench after heating it a little. I've heard GAP keeps a record of every build they do so maybe a phone call would save you some time.

I probably wouldnt put a screw driver through it if you want to use it again.

The screwdriver method is the best. Thats what i have usef in the past, it will not screw it up.

I had the same thing when I changed to a supressor. Get the largest screwdriver that will go thru the vent slot and take a heat gun to it. Worked perfect and the brake was unharmed. The ceracoat wasn't even messed up from the heat gun. I was amazed at how much torque the Loctite would stand without the heat and how easy it was with it. Kind of makes me wonder if it wouldn't make the torque spec for the BATF permanently attached brake rule. I'm sure there is some reason you couldn't use it. Just a thought.

I use a brass rod/punch and a little heat. Leaves no marks at all.

Just heat up the brake area and slightly behind it with a heat gun and put the punch through the holes and turn.

You can get them at Brownells and lots of other dealers. I think anyone who works on there own rifles a little should have a set.

They are great for trigger work, knocking AR pins out, etc...

Do not use a lot of heat and then go for a strap wrench. It will melt the strap and you will have a big mess to clean up.

These commone brakes are usually common threads like 5/8x24. You should be good to go for the TBAC can.

Use a peice of brass bar-stock.

Theres no real need for lock-tite, you should be pulling it off every 5-600 rounds to clean anyway.
