We had bright sunny skies with the predicted breeze from the N/NW, but as you can see, we all seemed to shoot thru some sort of Twilight Zone as all of our scores were down today. An explanation eludes me...

Most of us wanted to put our names down as <span style="font-style: italic">"Anonymous" </span>

A fine day at the range with our friends anyway. Thanks!

Re: Results Odessa Oct.18th

They may not have been the prettiest targets I've ever shot, but they got me top spot today! I never thought I'd see that after the beginning of the season.

It is kind of interesting that scores were down across the board. I had a few suprises with shots that felt good, but went off to neverland. And I was really trying to focus on the basics. Interesting. See what happens next time.

Todd - agree, tell your wife we hope she feels better soon.

Thanks again Scott - It's always a good day shooting with everyone there!

Same here. Not that I'm any sort of great marksman but I felt like I was shooting well most of the time, just not hitting the target. Same load and rifle and shot about 20 points lower than my last match.

Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.

Re: Results Odessa Oct.18th

Wind was forecast as from the North. There is a ridge just North of our target line, as there is at Cherry Ridge, and also at Bodines.

There are days when each of these ranges exhibit what I can best describe as 'squirrely' deviations, and I suspect it's when winds are from the North.

As the wind passes over the ridge, it sorta does a spillover, similar to water going over a spillway. This creates rolling eddies, characterized by vertical deflections that have little or no corresponding 'tells' in the environment. Depending on foliage and terrain alongside the shooting lane, it can also produce horizontal deflections, again, with no obvious environmental 'tells'.

My best guess is that's what's been plaguing our shooters.

My best suggestion is that headwinds at such ranges may not be as harmless as one might expect. <span style="text-decoration: line-through">It's a simple fact that there can be no truly horizontal airflows over devious terrain.</span> Maybe it's more accurate to say that when the terrain has significant vertical in it, so does the ambient airflow.

On days when winds are such and deviations are 'odd', it might pay to experiment with shooting when headwinds are in a lull.

I'm hoping I can spend some time on the range with North winds and a lot of wind flags.
