Results Rayners Long Range March 2014 match

OK, I shot on Sunday and got to talk to others that shot on Saturday. Saturday had lots of sunshine and warm temps but was windy. The word is the wind was bad but was pretty steady. Sunday was COLD and windy, they said it was about the same speed but it was switching directions in between shots. Watched a few shooters on our relay that would use the same wind call as the shooter beside them and get a 5ft left miss, chamber a new round and then get a miss 5ft off the target the opposite direction. That is some serious wind.

So it seems both days had nasty conditions so both days were tough. Shooters that shot both days had similiar scores so we'll call it even up and no one had an advantage. Hard to learn anything in these conditions but if it was easy everyone would be doing it and it'd get boring pretty fast. Occasionally it would settle down for a bit and a shooter might be able to get three shots off before conditions changed but it wasn't the norm.

Want to congratulate Chris (my son) who shot his new 6XC barrel on his ugly old Savage for being the Match Winner today. Would like to say he has a great teacher but he's worked hard at it and glad the gun is shooting like it used to. I can be happy with that and be proud of him for his accomplishment. Dusty did very well with his new gun and will be a hard one to keep up with this summer. Randy also did very well with his handgun, narrowly beating out Dale.

Don't let the lower than normal scores fool you, everyone worked for each target they hit and even with perfect scope adjustments and shots Mother Nature guided the bullet where she wanted it. Hopefully April will be a better day for us. Saw some new faces, hope they had fun and do come back again. Many thanks to Tom, Carolyn and the crew for having such a wonderful place for us all to enjoy this great hobby. Great chow as always but do hope they turn up the temp and turn down the wind for next month.

Margaret or John Jordon - assuming you'll check this thread. This is Allan, the guy with the .243 AICS rifle that kept asking about your equipment. I have another question. I noticed you have skid pads attached to your AICS, and I like that idea better than throwing around beanbags to rest the rifle. Which size, small or large, do you use? I made a paper mockup and the small would seem to work best, the large seems huge, like up over the sides hitting the barrel huge, but I've read a few times that the large / A5 is the correct size.

That's likely a record for most ranges short of something big like a State Championship match of some sort. Good to see that much interest in the game. Who knows what will happen when the weather gets nicer.

I was too cold to get the camera out for a pic of position 6. It sure would have been nice to shoot on Saturday with the spring like conditions. I'm positive I would have hit more targets if I didn't have to wear my snow gear and could stop shivering...

Still moves pretty darn fast for getting 50+ shooters through per day.

You should go study your ballistic chart and compare your 6mm to a .308.

The 6mm isn't going to eliminate a good wind call, but it damn sure isn't going to hurt...

Only thing that worries me is how the wind is going to fight the 105 Berger vs the 175gr SMK that I have always been used to. My MV has changed by about 500fps.

Chrono'd was between 3040 and 3050, ballistic calculator drop correction for 400, 600, 800, and 1000 put it close to 3100 but I can live with that. 26" Krieger 1/8tw MTU barrel.

But there is no better way to learn how your gun will shoot in a type of environment, until you shoot it in that environment. I take every range session as a learning experience, and the couple of events I went to at Rayners last year each time I learned more, and slowly moved up, so I will hopefully keep going down the same road with this better rifle.

Dave gave good advice, I think you'll be very surprised wit your XC. Chris is getting 3050 with his 24" CBI barrel and I'm getting 2750 from my 16" handgun barrel. Even with my short barrel I'm needing less elevation and wind than your 175's out to 1000 yards.

Thats awesome, your pistol was the first 6xc I ever shot and I loved it. I seen the great job Chris dad this past weekend. My original rifle before getting built into this XC was a 700 .308 SPS Tactical, slow 1/12tw only pushing 2550MV.

Will you both be shooting the next match also? And how well is your Norma brass holding up?

I'm not shooting the spring match this time... I will be back for the fall match though..

Try not to overthink the match, pay attention to your conditions, build good positions and have a good time.. Everyone at Rayner's will lend a hand to you if needed.

Keep an eye on Topstrap though.

Great shooting Chris! After watching him hammer the small targets all day, as well as all the other guys that shoot 6mm, I can definitely say 6mm isn't at a disadvantage in wind at all!

I don't shoot a 6XC, but I do shoot a .243 with the 105 Hybrids. I would have to say the 6MM's shooting this bullet have an advantage over any of the guns that are not shooting bullets that are up in the heavier weight range for that caliber.

Looking at past Rayners results, and seeing what has happened live, the majority of its boils down to how you perform with the rifle. Theres 6mm's and 7mm's at the top of the list, and at the middle and bottom also. You can take someone with a .243 who is an experienced shooter and put them next to a new guy with a AX338 who hasn't been in the game as long, and more than likely the little bullet is going to come out on top.

The BC's on the 105gr Hybrids versus the BC of the 175gr SMK 7mm only has a difference of about .50, so performance is going to boil down to what happens behind the stock more than whats going through the barrel in my opinion.

A rimfire match would be fun but the other day when we were shooting out thru 400 with them it'd sure have to be pretty quiet to hear the hits, If the targets were freshly painted you might see all the hits but we saw very few on the targets used for the last long range rifle match. They would move both targets at the 234 yard line, barely wiggle the larger one and did shake the smaller at 300, nothing but "ding" on larger at 375 but would shake the smaller one a bit, nothing but slight "ding" on 400 and same on middle one at 400. Maybe something like disc plates might give more sound but a steel plate match for the rimfires out thru 400 would be neat for something different.

We're putting the scope back on the 223 so we'll be in for it whenever we all decide to do it.
