I post about pistols from time to time and every once in a while do a review. My background is that I have been shooting USPSA since the early 2000s and hit G in 2006. Since then, one of the things that I do for a living is I am one of the owners of a retail firearms store with an attached shooting range. We sell and rent guns to the public. To me pistols are very subjective in that what feels good to me, may not feel good to someone else.

At some point in the last year, I did a kind of review on pistols and I don't really make an argument about any of the subjective stuff. I do however tend to comment on reliability. I think at this point, I am a pretty good source on it because 1) I have extensively shot most full frame production pistols in the US, more than a little bit. 2) We have a rental fleet with more than 500 firearms in it and we keep data on when they go out of service to include things like how often we have to clean them, how often and what kind of repairs we have to make and how often we have real failures.

About a year ago, I got to shoot a Walther PDP Pro with the Parker Mountain Machine comp and I really enjoyed it. So I bought two Walthers so that I could cannibalize them and made one for myself. This particular pistol now officially has over 50K rounds fired through it and I wanted to detail the problems that I had with it. When I first put the pistol together, I went to the range and in the first magazine I had two failures to feed shooting 115 grain Winchester white box range ammo. I immediately got aggravated and was looking at the pistol, the things I installed and saw the instructions for the comp. It clearly stated that the pistol functions with 124 grain or heavier ammunition and that 115 grain was not recommended. So I have now shot another 49,980 some odd rounds through it without a single failure. I have not had to replace a single part, there was not a single break or failure. Over the 50,000 rounds fired, I cleaned the pistol after the first 500 round range session because it was kind of covered with grease in some spots that smelled bad when it heated up. Since that cleaning, I have not cleaned the pistol once. (I have cleaned the end of the surefire multiple times and the optics multiple times).

I went back and checked our rental fleet where we have several PDPs including 5 and 4 inch frame pistols in both the normal and Pro versions. They do get cleaned every 5k rounds (got to keep the customers happy) but none of them have had a failure of any kind just like my personal pistols. I never thought that I would write this but Walther has moved into my personal S Tier of pistols in terms of reliability to join most Glocks and almost all of the hammer fired H&K pistols.

I have also been shooting USPSA for a long time and get a lot of hate from my friends for still shooting an iron sighted P30L but I freaking love that thing! This post is very timely as I've been oogling a Walther PDP Match for the last few weeks and I think I'm going to (forgive me for this) pull the trigger here soon.

I appreciate the no nonsense comments on reliability which is substantially more helpful than "It feels great in the hand" style reviews. Gives me confidence in my decision to give a Walther a shot.

I have been eyeing the PDP but haven't pulled the proverbial trigger.
I do have a P30L from Langdon Tactical that I really like. It is obviously snappier than my CZ Custom Shadow 2.

This is timely, I appreciate it. With the P320 now riding a shelf for the foreseeable future, I am in need of a replacement and have been considering either a P30L or a P226 variant. I have a P30 in 40 and love the gun just don't love shooting it - and have a HK45 which is a great gun.

I'll add Walther to the lineup, as I have had a few friends highly recommend them...

I would look at Grey Gun for their triggers and short reset kit for the H&K's. I think you would enjoy those even more. The P30L would give you a little less muzzle flip imo. I would try it out.

If you have smaller hands or find racking the slide a bit harder, you would do well to do yourself a favour and check out the PDP-F model (or the PDP-F Pro model).

They have slightly smaller grips, reduced trigger reach and slightly lighter springs.

In my case they fit my hand very nicely.

The P30L in 9mm is a whole lot softer and nicer to shoot than the standard P30 in .40 S&W

That being said, it's a DA/SA pistol by default (there are a number of variants).
In DA mode it's not going to have the same nice smooth light pull as the H&K VP9 or the Walther PDP

Also if you want something even softer shooting and don't mind the weight, check out the Walther PDP Metal Match or Metal compact.
It adds a fair bit of weight and makes them really nice to shoot. The Walther PDP Metal Match will hang nicely with a lot of high end target pistols.

I was just looking at the polymer Walther PDP 5” for my son and I to each use in the April Mammoth Sniper Challenge match. I have begun training and hope my 48 year old legs can keep up with his 20 year old legs.

I've actually been looking at the PDP Pro X for a few days now.

My hands work best with the M&P and the large (coke bottle) backstraps. I am hoping to get to hold a PDP pretty soon.

Finally got my gun, Walther says 4-6 weeks to get the "included" red dot plate. That takes a bit of the shine off the gun...

Otherwise, sites are shit, gun is quite nice, to the range I go to shoot my shit-sited Walther...

Considering how many different plate mounting options there are, the way they do it (get the gun then log in and pick your plate to get mailed to you) is the only way to do it without having to increase the cost a lot for the end users.

Blame the optics companies for each wanting their own extra special mounting plate.

On my end, it took just under 2 weeks for the ones I requested to come in.

At this point, if they are available for the platform I only you Arise Manf optic plates. The Walter factory plates are okay.

I have been impressed with our PDP pro. Best striker trigger I have felt and has been extremely reliable so far.

For me personally, the gun does not point as naturally to me as my preferred cz p10’s, and the recoil impulse has more muzzle rise and “snap” but does settle back on target pretty quickly with my 130pf 125gn loads.

The cheap plastic sights I actually think is a smart move on their part. No matter what sight they put on the gun 1/2 the people wouldn’t like it so they out cheap plastic adjustable sights which work great for people that don’t know any better and let the people that care choose exactly the sight they like. My preference black serrated rear, fiber optic front.

My wife has claimed it and now wears a holosun comp. Can’t wait for the weather to cool down to try it in some local USPSA matches.

The PDP and PPQs just flat out run. Shoot pretty good too.

FYI, C&H and Holosun both make optics that direct mount to PDPs (all but the absolute earliest models) if you don't want to mess with plates.
