Richards Microfit Stock

I can't seem to get an answer from anyone there, which is kinda stearing my away from purchasing. But still, I would like to know if this stock will fit my Marlin 917VR. I'm assuming so because I have seen Marlin 917's with them, but I want to be sure. This is the stock I am interested in...

I bet you can, it say is fits the 917v so it should fit yours. I don't know what the r stands for in yours. I can tell you this, you need to LOVE sanding. I have bought 2 stocks from them and both have needed there fair share of sanding, like a month of every night.

Oh my bad. I must have missed where it said that. There are a bunch of 917's. Mine's VR for varmint. But there's a v, vs, vt, a few different ones. And yeah I was talking to someone that had one that let me know what I was getting into as far as sanding and everything. But I could use a new project. Thanks!

I copied this from their website:

Marlin: Model 882 & 982 (all variations), 25MN, 17V, 917V (Soon Available Marlin XL7)

They are listed as 96% inleted. So some sanding of the action is probably needed, and more than likely the barrel channel as well being your rifle has the heavy barrel instead of a sporter contour.

...96%, yes. Drop-In in terms of the action, yes...

But "that 4%" may take you some HOURS to finish...


I got this Microfit for my custom 6.5WSSM....all told, I have over 30 hours labor invested in this stock.....


Tools required:


(1) Belt Sander
(1) Palm Sander
(1) Dremel
(1) Sanding Block
Various grits of sanding paper

(A Lot) of labor of love!!

nice looking stock, how do you like the finger groves? I have one for my 77/22 that should be done in a month or so, and that is one of the hardest spots to sand, and with the finger groves, wow that had to be hard to get it perfect? and what did you finish with?

Is that the "electric blue" color?

Ive been thinking about getting that color but yours look a little less vivid.

I didnt realise they require so much work... but i guess thats part of the fun when you think about it.

The stocks for my savage 93 says 99% fit... considering you have experience with this, how much overall work do you feel i would have to put in for fitting?

Freakin SICK pics. I have all the tools for the job. I'm lookin at that tactical. So do they come colored and you have to sand and clear coat? Do you have to worry about sanding any of the colored finish off? 96% is ok. Could be worse.

You will not sand the color out with finish sanding. You will need to apply a finishing oil of some type to bring out the color like that, then clear coat over it i believe. Just clearcoat will leave the colors dull i would think.

Gotcha. Gotta get my wood working knowledge on. I'm more of a metal worker/mechanic myself. Cutting/grinding/welding and what not.

SmallBore, the laminates are made up of multiple layers of different colord woods, so you can sand off the color

Also looking at the tactical as well... might drop the bomb soon

Ive got a 77/22 thumbhole and a 10/22 benchrest style stock from them that I havent had time yet to finish out. They are rough on the outside but that is to be expected on a semi-finished stock. The inlets will need minor work and the outside will need a lot of work. Also, expect a 2 to 3 month wait after ordering from them. And zero communication.

Finger grooves are nice....custom fit to my fingers!

use the small Dremel sanding drum.....initially I used Birchwood Casey Tru Oil....I didn't like the "wear-ability"....so I re-sanded and ended up with about (30) LIGHT coats of auto-lacquer clear coat from Napa...

yes..electric blue...99% fit....most of the receiver, and barrel contact inlets should be good to go with minor detailing...I would still expect a lot of "outlet" sanding...

..not a lot of experience per say on furniture, etc. I have done probably 5 or 6 rifles...

yes..sand and clear coat....the colored finish is through and through on the laminates...I had no issues with losing the color..

Yeah the tactical for 917's say it may take up to 3 months. I'm usually not that patient, but that stock is worth the wait IMO!

I have finished a couple laminates, and the auto clear will bring out the color with out using a oil finish first.

I do usa a sandable sealer first to lock out mositure. It also is used to make sure you have the surface flat. I apply one coat at a 50-50 mix and then sand it off, then another full strength just to make sure(over kill)!

Not a Richards, I do not like inletting, I went with a Joel Russo and a 100% inletted! And the communication is great!

here is another done the same way! I like the auto clear because when you smack a rock at a comp, you can just resand and reapply

I ordered one for my Savage .17HMR back in March and will probably have to wait a while longer since it is a LEFT handed model which they say takes an extra couple of weeks. I dont know why that should be, since you would think that they would make a common stock and then just cut out the slot for the bolt handle on the side required.

Also, does anyone know if you can use wood bleach on these stocks to lighten the color since I would like the wood to be as light a color as possible?

Thanks for the kind words about the stocks. I can take a Russo stock and have it ready to shoot auto clear in about 6 hours. that includes the dry time of the sandable sealer.
Both the actions are Rem 700. One is a LA and the other a SA.
I hate to miss quote one of his stocks in public so I am sending you a pm.

p620346, there's a special type of bleach for wood. Clorox won't do it. Contact www.Rockler.com. Its called Oxalic acid. $9.49. Call them. They are GREAT to work with.

I have bought several from them. And they are what they are. A decent priced stock that takes a little work to finish. If you have a little time then you will like them. I have not needed to do a ton of sanding on the ones I have bought. But you can expect tons of sanding if you want finger grooves in a stock. The only thing about Richard's is they are SLLOOOWWWW. If you can wait then they are worth the wait. But if you are in a hurry, or are the kind of person who keeps bugging them, then buy elsewhere. Below are pictures of a couple of mine. The first one is a LH TH for a Savage 22 magnum. The other is a 300 WSM.

Where else can you get a LH TH stock for a RH action?? Tom.

I got a Richards Microfit stock for my little Sako L46 action and it was a long wait and will require a lot of grinding, sanding and finishing before its close to useable. The stock is oversized in width and height so a lot of material needs to be removed. The reason you can carve finger grooves is due to that extra material. I dont' know if all their stocks are like this but the 2 I've seen were. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, the laminate is excellent and no one else offers the inletting they do so it can be worth going with them. The only caveat is make sure you're willing to do some woodworking.

Only thing that ever stopped me from going a Richards stock is the horrible stories i have read about people waiting and waiting and then getting dodgey inletting jobs.

Would do my head in considering a return would require international postage

+1 on that. The one for my Savage .17HMR seems to have been intended for a .338LM, there is so much extra wood. This might be a good thing for someone who wants the exact same stock for their rimfire and centerfire, but they ought to offer a rimfire option with a lot less wood.

The Microfit stock for my 10/22 had the finger grooves precut. But as others have stated, lots of finishing work, I wished I had spent more time on mine. I used Tru Oil and have been happy. They were slow to respond to e-mails, but I selected something that was in stock, so it shipped quickly.

It took a month for me to finish my Richards "Microfit" Stock. There were many mess ups in the inletting and they even neglected to inlet for the bull barrel of my 917V Marlin. In all, there was NOTHING "microfit" about the rough piece of lumber that I bought for $200.
