Re: Rifle Advise

Get a decent .22LR bolt rifle and LEARN techique, breathing, etc. before you get a centerfire. Lots can be learned with a .22LR. Oh, and by the way, READ everything here. There are alot of very experienced people here from all walks of life.

Re: Rifle Advise

ive beentaught a lot from my dad and some of his friends i hunt and can make 300+yard shots with a cheap Remington 715 and am planing on getting a ruger 10/22 at some point. But i wanna get a new all around rifle to start the longer and still hunt.

Re: Rifle Advise

Hey bud,

Welcome to the forum.

Let me say that I am not a expert marksman and my opinion has about as much value as a rubber dog turd, however I do realize that you can prolly have alot of questions and I'll give you a couple of ideas that you can run with.

First off, you do not need a .22 if you are already familiar with guns and shooting. Hell if you can shoot 300-500 yards and be remotley accurate your already a step ahead of some of the people on here. Im going to tell you what most anyone else is gonna tell you and thats to get a .308 rifle. Now the next questions is which one?? The two most discussed "off the shelf" rifles are going to be Remington and Savage. Both are great rifles and both usually shoot less than 1 moa out of the box with factory ammo. I more than one of both brands of the above mentioned rifles. I like them both. They are both accurate. So you need to make your own choice as far as brand.

For the sake of "conformity" Im gonna say look at the Remington 700. Here are a few that you can research and ponder on. All in .308 caliber Rem 700 short action.

700 SPS-V about $540
700 SPS Tacticle about $575
700 PSS about $800
700 5R about $900-$1000

Check out Buds guns online. They usually have some very competitive prices. Dont forget about the "for sale" section here on this forum....Lots of great rifles for sale here.

These are all great starting platforms that will be very accurate and serve you well and also be something that you can "upgrade" as you see the need down the road.

Optics....now this a whole nother bag of worms, but I'll summarize briefly. Im a varible power guy when it comes to scopes. I do not like fixed power optics. I see no benefit to them. Dont get brain washed into thinking you have to spend $1k plus on a good scope. Here are a few that you can look at that will have target turrets that you can "dial" when you learn the dope of your rifle as well as a side focus knob.

Vortex Viper
Vortex Crossfire (cheap, but mine is working great)
Falcon Menace
Nikon Buckmaster (great scope for the price)
Bushnell Elite 3200 (AO-No side focus)

Spend as much time as you can on here reading. You will learn alot. I have. A assure you that most any question you have or will have has already been asked and anwered on here many many times in the past.

Good Luck,

2ndchance, i think a really good starting point would be go down to walmart, (most carry it) and buy that marlin 925m in .22 mag. reach behind you and grab the simmons 8 Point, 4-12x40mm for 50$ grab some 40gr cci hollow points and have fun, you will pay 250bucks for a good lookin gun with a thick barrel and a decent scope that will last as long as you, ive had mine for 3 years and have had not one single problem, i floated the barrel and it shoots like my big guns, ive killed 3 yotes and 4 hogs over 100lbs all with one shot, now this is just my 2cents, good luck man

Re: Rifle Advise

Why do you all keep telling him to go buy a .22 when he is already familiar with shooting a large centerfire rifle (.270) out to 300-500 yards?? Are yall actually reading his entire post before you give a reply??

The guy clearly states the following: "I hunt and can make shots 300-500 yards with a cheap Rem...."

Re: Rifle Advise

I suggest going with an AR platform. Ammo is cheaper than any other cartridge out there. And since you're in collage, keeping cost low for extra activities is probably a must. They're easy to do well with, as long as you know how to clean and maintain them.

Re: Rifle Advise

If you want a new upper with a flat top for a scope, then I would suggest look at Compass Lake Engineer or White Oak Precision. Both have a very good reputation for giving the biggest bang for the bucks.
