Rifle opinions

Re: Rifle opinions

Not sure what "shit" you are trying to knock down but from a strictly target perspective, .308 will have no problem at 700 yards and beyond if the shooter is able. 300 ultra mag will double that distance, again shooter willing.

I'd start with what you have. Pick the 25-06, 7mm, or .270 until you are good and know what you really want.

Until then I will follow this thread for sheer entertainment value.

Re: Rifle opinions

Construction, it now sounds like you're looking for something different to or in addition to an already sizable collection of rifles, which is really a much different question than asking what would be a good way to get in to long range shooting (which is what I think most of us took your original post to be asking).

You'll probably get more useful replies now that you've posted what you've already got, and a description of what you want that your current rifles don't provide. Good luck,

John

Re: Rifle opinions

Shot placement. 7 mag is plenty at that distance. Practice with what you have. You have multiple very capable rifles and 285 isn't all that far away

Re: Rifle opinions

jhnmdahl, I truely apoligize for the confusion.

I guess when I think long distance, I don't usually think conventional hunting rifle. I also think 600+ yds. But that is just me.

Re: Rifle opinions

i agree bm11. But please understand, these "pigs" are not your typical run of the mill farm pigs.

The 338 or whatever is more for target but would entertain game at 500+

Re: Rifle opinions

You'll find a lot of guys here shooting 600-1000 yards with a 308, or even 6.5x47 and other smaller rounds. Palma shooters compete at 1000 yards with 155gr bullets in a 308, and manage to shoot amazing groups.

assuming that my assumptions about the caliber of that DSR-1 are correct.

Re: Rifle opinions

I guess a major key to that distance is hand loading as well. At this point I am just buying ammo off the shelf.

I guess I never considered a 308 capable of doing 600 to 1000. I figured it would have a huge amount of drop (much like the others I have) making to unsuitable for that distance.

I stand correct!

thats a hell of a hog! The only problem with shooting one like that, how do you load it in the truck.

I stand correct! </div></div>You don't need to handload. As for the .308 at range- a lot of drop, but not as much as most would think WHEN COMPARED to "flat shoooting" rounds. Everything drops at range. More some than others. Good .308 ammo will drop predictably and accurately, which is part of the key.

Re: Rifle opinions

your 300 should drop anything you will run into
you could always turn it into a 338 edge

Re: Rifle opinions

i started with a 223. havent shot it that far yet but its wonderful so far. if you plan on shooting very far id start with a .308 savage or remington. spend the money on a nice scope and lots and lots of bullets.

In my experience any hog shot with a 300 ultra at that distance will die. As far as cold knocking it down, almost no round will do that most of the time. Not sure but that round is probably still at or above 2500 fps at 285 yards. Hunting rounds are mostly designed for controlled expansion. They create a massive wound cavity, but the round will still most likely pass through a pig weighing in the 200-250lb range given a broadside shot. Given you can hit the vitals with your shot. Everybody talks about "knock down" capability of certain rounds. Very rarely does an animal just drop on the spot even with perfect shot placement. What your looking for is a round that can still retain enough energy at a given distance for your projectile to perform correctly. The 300 ultra has plenty of performance for this purpose. As for killing hogs at 300 yards. Last month I killed 3 in about 30 seconds from 200 to 300 yards with my AR-15 with 55 grain .223 FMJ's. Not a lot of "knock down" power with those rounds but they did job.

Re: Rifle opinions

I started with a beautiful Sako hunting rifle in 30-06, and developed a flinching problem. If you buy a 308 and it is only 8 lbs plus scope, you will also develop a flinching problem after about 50 rounds.

Personally I would by a .260 as it has decent barrel life, moderate recoil, and can be used for hunting. If you are going to take time to go out and practice, it would much easier if you could shoot 100+ rounds at a time, rather than stopping at only 50.

If you buy a heavier rifle, say 10-12 lbs plus scope, this will reduce the recoil and the .308 may be fine.

Nice, how much did it weigh?

Re: Rifle opinions

I said it early on in this thread, get a .22 and learn how to shoot first. below, granted not nearly as massive as some others pictured was taken with a .22 conversion, jus sayin

Re: Rifle opinions

Not dropping a pig with a 7Mag and it's the guns fault? Yeah, you need a 20mm Anzino. But to be sure, you might have to nuke it from space.
