Rifle reccommendations?

Hi,

I can spend about $1000 on a heavy barrel 308 ($1000 does not include the optics).
So far, the Rem 700P seems to have good features for the money.
It will initially be shot out to 500 yards; however, one of my buddies is trying to talk me into longer ranges as well.
This will be my first rifle of this type, and wanted to ask for advice so I can eventually make an informed decision.

In addition to the 700P, what other rifles would you suggest I consider?

Thank you,
tc

+1. Keep your eyes open. I got mine new for $980 shipped off Gunbroker.

Re: Rifle reccommendations?

Like the others have mentioned look out for a deal on a 700P/5R/LTR then get the best glass you can afford.

Re: Rifle reccommendations?

Thank you!
About the 5R....I don't see it on Remington's website.
Does anybody know....
--> What type of stock does it have?
--> Does it have a floating barrel?
--> What trigger does it come with?

Also.....if I push my budget to $1500 does that open new doors, or is the 700P/LTR/5R still the better options for the money?
(one of my buddies said the Tikka T3 Tac is pretty good, but it is more expensive....I wonder if is it worth the extra money?)

If I'm not careful this could become adictive

Re: Rifle reccommendations?

All I can recommend is exactly what has been already said. $1k will get you into the 700P, LTR and 5R without any issue. All three are super for out of the box rigs that can easily be upgraded over time on a very reasonable expanded budget when needed.

All three come with good stable stocks (all HS Precision still), have floated barrels and the triggers are X-mark adjustable on current models. If you shop around you'll find some good deals. Be patient and good things will come along.
