I'm looking to put a scope on a 257 AI I just built. I primarily want to use this for hunting in CO and WY. I was thinking a 3-12 or a 4-16ish. What should I be thinking about and looking at as far as brands and reticles go, I use a LRF and don't want a Mil-dot reticle. S&B, NF, USO or Zeiss, I'd like to keep it under 2k.

Thanks in advance

Victory Diavari in the 4-16 flavor with the #20 reticle would complement that rifle nicely as well as be in your price range.

So you'll be dialing for wind and elevation always? If that's th case, I'd look at whatever fit the weight I wanted and had the best reputation for tracking. I'd probably look at the 2.5-10x NF, but they will always have a ranging reticle in them. Same for USO. S&B and Zeiss both make scoped without ranging reticles. Though, personally, I'd include them or versatility. There's no tangible downside.

Have you considered a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x50 with a Z-Plex? You could afford that easily with your budget and it should suit your needs nicely.

If you are always going to dial, I would go Nightforce in 3.5-15. The chances of the turrets going out on you while hunting are slim to none. (Personal experience on this scope only, I don't have experience with any of you other options) The price tag on these is under $2000, and can be had used and reliable in the for sale section here.

I know you said no ranging reticle, but as a thought, what happens if if your LRF dies on you (gets wet, lost, or batteries die)? I like the NP-R1 and NP-R2 reticles. Easy for ranging IF you get in a sticky situation with a 7x7 bull elk and you just dunked your LRF.

I have heard the S&B and USO are top notch as well, but I only feel comfortable with personal experiences. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I get the mil-dot ranging aspect of the back up plan I just find the mil-dot reticles "too busy." I bought a Leica LRF because they are water proof to 3 meters and I bring a back up battery. NF calculator says the Velocity 600 best fit, but not perfect... intriguing.
