took my Remington 550-1 with 4X Bushnell scope out of the safe to check it's sighting with .22 CB's, the rifle and scope were cold to the touch, my first three shots were dead on at 20 yds., i then laid the rifle down on a bench in the sunlight, a half hour later i was going to plink a rodent off the wall, i missed, have no idea where the bullet went or hit, (later found a lead splat on the block about 4" below the rat) shot at the 20 yd target, the bullet was 2" low at 20 yd. fired another 6 or 7 rounds and the bullet hits were more of a pattern than a group, checked all the mounting attachments, all were snug, next day took the rifle out, COLD and she put 5 rounds in a quarter sized group.
i realize this set up is no match target set up, but has any one else ever had this experience with any caliber and/or scope ? does the aluminum tube heat faster than the glass ? are some of the internal components more susceptible to differences of heat ? why are most scopes BLACK ?
i am going to experiment with my Nightforce scoped 5.56mm ODA to see if the Sun light heat will change the POI.
