i am looking for a a bolt action rifle that i can shoot a paper plate at least 500 yards. i am still in high school and the rifle can not be over $1000. i have exsperience with shooting out to 800 yards with my brothers 7 ultra mag but the ammo is to exspencive. i like the 308 win because it is cheap. if you have any suggestions i would really apriciate it. thanx alot.

Re: rifle under 1000

Sounds like you got it. Most of the big name manufacturers have a heavy barrel rifle that will shoot minute of pie plate at 500 for under a grand. Also only a sniper has a sniper rifle, the rest of us just shoot long range. Is the grand including your optics or do you already have a scope?

Re: rifle under 1000

I suggest staying in high school and paying attention in your grammar and spelling classes...

Now, as far as a rifle goes, do a simple search for "starter rifles". Just look through the bolt action forum and read the countless threads asking your same exact question. The answer you might see quite a bit, is the Remington 700 SPS. It is easily modified, either now or later down the road when you have more dough to dump into the package.

And if you only need to shoot to 500 yds, look at something like a .243, which will still be cheaper than the 308, and has more than enough ability to reach 500 yds.

Re: sniper rifle under 1000

Look for a Rem 700 SPS or Savage 10. I'd suggest ditching the stock immediately and look into a HS precision, B&C, or Choate stock, and decent lower level optic (SWFA, Bushnell, Weaver, etc). Those 3 would be right around your $1000 mark. Do a quick search here on other people's budget builds. That will give you some visuals on lower dollar builds guys here have done, and maybe some ideas for yourself.

Word to the wise (since you mentioned ammo $), for plinking or practicing- cheap ammo is ok, however if you get serious, cheap ammo is... cheap. Many of us reload for two main reasons. Quality and $. Quality meaning you can tune a load for your gun that will *usually* work better than factory match ammo. $ meaning after initial investment of press and dies, your price per round drops significantly (last I checked I think my .308 $/round was somewhere around 47 cents)

Hope some of this helped. Good luck and Welcome to the Hide

Re: rifle under 1000

Remington LTR in 308.
My LTR is sub-MOA with FGMM.
It will go to 500 easily with a 10x Bushnell scope.
Should be able to find the rifle used for $800 and the scope for under $200. Use Burris Signature rings in Burris dual dovetail bases.
Maybe a tad over $1K all up.

Re: rifle under 1000

Rem 700 used with the trigger reworked already (preferably the old style not Mark XPro) or any Savage in .223 or .243 with a SS10x fixed scope on top. No recoil and you'll end up shooting a lot more since the ammo is so much cheaper. You'll have plenty of holes in that paper plate at 500.

Re: rifle under 1000

Savage long range precision in any of the calibers listed.

Savage 10fcp, you can get this with a choate tactical stock from Cabelas for about $750. Or, you can get it with the hs precision tactical, or a Mcmillan, both will be more coin.

You may pull off getting a Remington 5r for under a grand.

Re: rifle under 1000

i picked up a remmy 700 for $565, put a swfa super sniper on it and have been very pleased with the results, its a good lil shooter. im upgrading the trigger, bolt knob, stock, and optics now.

Re: rifle under 1000

Pick up a Remington 700sps varmint for $550-600 than get a Bell and Carlson M40 style stock and you will have a great rig for well beyond 500. That will bring you in for under a grand pretty easy leaving you some cash for optics. Just my .02 cents

Re: rifle under 1000

Im pretty much new the the world of long range shooting, but ive been shooting my hole life and was considering the 700 sps long range in a 300 rum any info on one of those?

Re: rifle under 1000

its on my 25-06 at the moment and seems to be very clear accurate easy to focus only thing i dont like is to return to zero the screw you loosen i adjusted the scope loosening it other than that it seems pretty solid definitely satisfied with it considering its a 400 dollars scope instead of 800 n up

Re: rifle under 1000

This is what I did.

Used R700 AAC-SD $500
B&C M40 ~$200
Bushnell 3200 Tactical Mil/Mil $200
Weaver Base $30
Rings $50-100

Smidge over 1k. For another $350 you can have a Atlas Bipod and a brake.

I know they take a long time to come in when you order them! Not many suppliers have them.

I got 1/2 moa with the factory non floated stock. Recently upgraded to a bell & carlson. Havnt shot it with the new stock yet but im sure ill be happy with the results!

Re: rifle under 1000

thinking about bedding the stock on my own kind of like the idea of the stock being bedded just for that exact action anyone got any input on if its better to do it that way for accuracy or not?

Re: rifle under 1000

I would go for a plain old Savage 308, stock of your choice, and swap the scope that comes with it for something a bit nicer. A paper plate at 500yrds is roughly asking for 1.5 MOA or better, any Savage should give you that.

(Assuming a 7-8" plate)

Re: rifle under 1000

If you don't plan on hunting big game with the rifle I suggest getting a used Tikka T3 in 223 with the 8 twist barrel. They can be had for around $500.

Recoil is light and the ballistics approximate 308 with the heavy bullets like the 75's-77's. less expensive to shoot than 308 and they are a joy to shoot.

SWFA is coming out with their new Super Sniper fixed power series riflescopes with matching mil turrets and modern mil reticle very soon. The 10x would be a good choice for various reasons. I'm guessing the price will be a little over $300???

Re: rifle under 1000

Shot my remington sps varmit .308 yesterday very pleased with it shot .4 moa at 150 yards with cheap ammo and the gun is still stock cant wait to get the barrel floated and stock bedded or a good stock on it and do some trail and error with reloading only thing im not impressed with is the X mark pro trigger either im doing something wrong or it only goes down to about 3 pounds and thats not near light enough for me
