Rifle Scopes Ring height on an AR platform...

Fellas I'm looking to scope an AR. I have got it figured out when it comes to glassing a boltgun, but never messed with an AR. What is the typical ring height that is needed, and what is typically comfortable for a 50mm piece of glass on an AR setup?

I would prefer to have quick detach rings or mount. Any particular mounts in mind? A few pointers would be great.

I run either a Larue 1.5 mount (1.5" high) or USO Extra High rings. Tough to get enough eye relief without the forward set mount.

You what a center height form 1.375" to 1.5".

I really like GG&G and AD Mounts for quick detach. If you what are really rock solid mount the Nightforce Uni-Mount. If cast is an issue then the Burris Mount are very nice for the price.

Because the stock height forces you to use high rings.
The recoil spring sits in a tube in the stock. It's aligned with the bolt, so stock drop is not an option.

Height from top of rail to center line of rings is 1.460 inches.

I have 2 of these and they work as advertised and do not mark up your rails like other brands can.

You can go up to a 56mm objective with this setup if you want to.

Another consideration to think about is if you do or want to run backup iron sights - you'll need to take the height of your folded rear sight into consideration as well as the ocular diameter. Measure your rear folded sight from the top of your rail to the sight's highest point. Take the diameter of your scope's ocular divided by 1/2. If these two measurements added together equal less than 1.460 inches, that scope will fit over your rear BUIS.

I was able to shoot just fine with medium rings on an LR-308.

I'm not sure why "extra high" would be necessary if a 50mm objective scope will fit on the rifle with medium.

I have been trying to find the answer to that question for a long time.

I'll venture a guess that it's to get your scope up so you can run BUIS if you choose too.

depends on a lot of things.

obj size
buis size if you wanna run them. both front and rear come into the equation.
NV alignment
hand guard type
The shooter.

Yes, there are exceptions to just about everything. I was trying to give a very simple answer to a very simple question from someone who seems to be unfamiliar with the basic operation of the AR.

Please feel free to list the exceptions.

If you want to go with really bullet proof mount, look here. Not technically a QD, but would go on and come off easy enough.
