Roll Call on NICS Delays .....

For the first time in my life I have been subject to a Delay with NICS. Now, I know this is a common occurrence for some of you, but for me it never happens. Furthermore, I have talked with several dealers who have complained about the rise in Delays since the beginning of last month.

For the first time in my life I heard the dealer say "Further Review", which I later had him explain to me. Then I saw him check the box for "Delay" with all kinds of questions going through my mind.

I've heard the typical "There's someone with the same name", "You have something on your record", or the proverbial,"have you ever had a high security clearance check within the last year?". None of these apply to me, and I went as far as to check with a friend at the local FBI field office and my local Sheriffs department. Nothing!!!

So, what's the story? Are some of you getting delayed for the first time for no apparent reason?

Thanks, and sorry for the rant. I'm highly curious to read some of your responses.

Re: Roll Call on NICS Delays .....

While not giving out too much info, I bought a lot of guns last week more than I had in the past few years combined. I bought from pawn shops, gun stores and general sporting good stores and not one of them took more than 15 mins to come back approved, most were right at 5-10 mins and all of them went through the online system. Colorado even has a stupid double check thing that the NRA forced on this state where all NCIS checks are double checked with CBI (Colorado bureau of investigations) which adds time to the check but even with that mine were all <15mins.

Luckily in GA a CCW means you don't have to have an NICS run on you when purchasing, the FFL just writes down your CCW number and fills out the paperwork. It's made buying so much simpler as we don't have to stand around and wait forever for them to do the check.

Well, the last time I had a security check was over 5 years ago, and, in speaking with the FBI today, security clearances are only 'flagged' while the investigation is going on. After the fact, it doesn't matter one way or the other!

Furthermore, if it were my security clearance or military records that were causing it then it wouldn't have just started happening. Seeing as I was honorably discharged over 3 years ago.

In researching this further I have found that the NICS examiners have drastically increased their 'Delay' responses since the beginning of the year. Could it be something as simple as the FBI is short handed and they don't have the manpower to do everything at once? I could understand if the NICS examiner center was short due to layoffs or leaves, but it's the not knowing that is eating me up.

Yep, with VA's version through the SP.

Over a week recently for a handgun...NEVER ever been delayed before, and no reason to that time.

Then, more recently, I was approved in less than 5 minutes for an assault rifle purchase.

So, who knows.........

Re: Roll Call on NICS Delays .....

Sometimes the delay status is due to the high volume of calls they are getting. As opposed to taking the time to actually look, its easier for them to pass it off to the actual examiner and have them do the work.

Well, here's the problem.

I did find out a few thing yesterday, and this is coming from 'the horse's mouth'. Try and follow me on this one.

Let's say you are delayed. Then they give you the 3 day wait. After the 3 days you pick up the firearm from the dealer, even though you didn't receive a "Proceed". If you DO NOT receive a proceed then every purchase from them on out will result in a delay. Simply because the issue was never resolved through their system.

It's kind of ridiculous if you ask me.
