To start off, this is not a precision build, it's a "SHTF and I can't find AR15 components or ammo, I need something to shoot" build.

I don't own any other AK's, but I do have an SKS, so the ammo is already piled in the corner. Dies, bullets, etc. are common with the SKS so I have supplies of that.

I have a ROMAK kit with a pre-punched flat for the receiver. I have a complete kit that passes compliance check but I have never folded up a receiver before.

Has anyone ever built one of these and/or has the tooling that they suggest? I have access to a good sheet metal brake that can handle up to 3/16" steel. I wasn't planning to build the folding fixtures since I'm only making 1.

Anyone have some insight or be willing to help me out with it?

The biggest hurdle to me is folding the sheet up, I have a TIG and I can weld everything myself, which means that there's no issue with bending the metal without an FFL 07 as long as that's the only operation that you do.

I'm not expecting the folding would come free, as long as it's someone who's experienced it before.

Re: ROMAK Kit Build

you don't need a FFL to accomplish this, but you can never sell a weapon you manufacture, and it must comply with all laws. Its very VERY important that the bolt carrier, and foward trunion are stamped with the same number, and the barrel should be still installed in the foward trunion, or have been removed by you. I folded one a long time ago, its a pain in the ass, I would get a second flat just in case, having a tig is good, this will allow you to weld the rails in, the trigger and hammer pin holes need to be heat treated. I suggest you find someone local who has done this, AK47.com or .net is a good place to find help, also if you give up on folding your own Global Trades receivers are completely heat treated not just the holes, the 1mm is the one to get, the 1.6mm are a pain in the ass because the trunions need to be shaved.

here are a couple I built

Re: ROMAK Kit Build

AGI makes a DVD on how to do the whole process. It would probably be a worthwhile purchase. After watching it, I am going to buy pre-bent receivers. One less headache.

Re: ROMAK Kit Build

Id call Nodak and get a reciever from them thats already folded and has marking and a serial number, yes itll be more expensive and have to go thru a FFL, but it will be trackable with a serial number if ever stolen.

Not trackable was the idea behind the whole thing. Stolen is less worrysome, I stamp S/N's in anything I make so that it's still trackable if I have to report its existence.

I'm tempted to just go buy a Nodak and screw all the parts together with a completed receiver though.

Re: ROMAK Kit Build

You can build a jig for bending the receivers if you have the supplies. They used to be available on the web for around $150. I have built several in the past and I would still be building them if the parts kits hadn't dried up. PM me with an email address and I can send you all the specs for the jig as well as instructions on the build and pics.

for the money spent buying parts needed its cheaper to buy the receiver. But with that being said I have built two. But sold all my stuff several months ago. But its nice to have the bending jig, rivet tool, spot welder and the pin press for removing the barrel pin. But if you have any questions PM me I'll do my best to help. Its been three years ago I built them. The heat treating is the biggest pain in the ass. I have shot both many times with no problems. But if I ever do I will buy a new receiver

Thats why I sold my stuff

I still have my build stuff.

A few guys I know have "several" parts kits hoarded away. I'm just hoping they may want to get rid of a few one day

Everyone needs at least two dozen or so AK's

Re: ROMAK Kit Build

you mean you have a romy g kit, not a romak, the "romak" is chambered in 762x54 and more often called a psl or fpk which is a completly different animal . which flat do you have the early tapco or the later tapco with prefolded top rails?
