i have a mod 70 action that is pretty rough. im thinking about using emery cloth on the rails. any reason not to. i really dont want to use lapping compound for fear of affecting headspace.

ive also heard to use toothpaste. i would think the emery cloth would work better but im far froma gunsmith

Re: rough model 70 action

What are you trying to do? Are you just busting rust? I've used a bead blast cabinet to clean all the old blueing off actions before I reblued them. You aren't going to remove very much material with emery cloth or toothpaste. You start using a file or a dremel tool, that's a whole different story. For rust, you may try to use some fine steel wool, it just depends on how bad the rust is.

Re: rough model 70 action

If you can lap a gun out of H/S then you've got the patience of a saint.

I spect your grandkids will be feeding you jello before that happens.

A file (used properly) to dig out the nicks followed by emery to smooth. Lightely blast to find the stubborn spots then emery some more.

Takes me about 4 hrs to spit shine an action.

Good luck.

I've used JB bore compound with great results on the rails of my 700. Whatever you use, make sure you get it out once your finished.

Re: rough model 70 action

Clean it, lube it, and forget it. The problem will ease itself after some reasonably significant use.

There was a time when I would consider using abrasives on a rifle. That time is long past. Rifles get enough wear without our helping that along.

Re: rough model 70 action

If it's a well used rifle, you probably have some terra firma and God knows what else in there. I'd try pulling the barreled action out of the stock, remove the bolt and really give it a good blasting to clean it out before removing metal. That compressed alcohol based gun cleaner isn't all that bad, just make sure to oil everything it get on when you're done.
