As an Alabamian (who votes), I will still be voting for Moore. I’m not some huge Moore fan/supporter, but I’m surely no Doug Jones supporter. If Moore did these things, and that is a big if, there can be a legitimate investigation.....not some crazy public kangaroo court headed up by people who really have an ax to grind politically. I have some pretty strong feeling about this, just like many others. I do find it odd that this is just now coming out. A judicial appointment/election (To the Supreme Court of Alabama no less) is not a simple, “yeah, I guess he’ will do” type thing. Major vetting, I would guess. I have a hard time believing this would not have surfaced before, yet the uber left leaning Washington Post can dig it up. I can’t even begin to address the fact that how can someone be prosecuted or persecuted for something that is just coming to light 40-ish years later with no proof other than he-said, she-said. No one saw it, no one can really corroborate the story(s). The reference above to the Salem witch trials is very apropos. The presumption of innocence is what set our judicial system apart form so many others. Furthermore, is this even prosecutable after all this time?
Secondly, I’m increasingly surprised at what is considered sexual assault/harassment anymore. I actually feel bad for women who were raped, etc. at the hands of a stranger or even a friend/family member only to see people losing their mind over a guy grabbing their butt. This is not just the Moore situation, I’m actually referring to some of the others that have popped up over the last few weeks. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not condoning a man grabbing a woman’s butt, but I’m trying to draw a disparity between butt grabbing and rape, etc. Surely, it is inappropriate. Surely a man should keep his hands to himself. But can/should it really be lumped together with rape, etc.? I am asking a legitimate question. I am trying not to be biased. I would be willing to bet that there are thousands upon thousands of women who would trade their sexual assault/rape for someone grabbing their butt. Again, I’m not trying to justify the behavior, but trying to note that the left is doing the same thing with sexual assault that they did with racism. If you water it down so much that everything under the sun is sexual assault (obviously for manipulative gain), then the public at large will eventually begin to dismiss it. When “everything is racist” then true racism cannot be exposed and eliminated. The same will soon go with sexual assault. People will begin to dismiss it as overblown and not legitimate.....and that is sad.
Lastly, I had to ask myself if there were things in my past that I would never want brought back up. I am nowhere near Moore’s age, but there are things in my past that I would never want brought back up. I’m not the same person I once was. I matured. I settled down. I grew as a man and as a human being. Don’t think for one second that any of the people casting stones at Moore are not guilty of sexual assault under the newest definition of it. It takes nothing to be labeled something unsavory anymore. An inappropriate joke. A drunken action. A demeaning or hateful word spoken in anger......all are apparently suitable events for someone to destroy you and your character. If Moore did these things, he did them 40-ish years ago. From my understanding nothing is more recent than that. Does time no longer heal all wounds? Can people no longer change? I would hope that as a supposedly a devout Christian man, Moore is telling the truth when he said these events never happened. If I am required to accept what these women are alleging is truth, why can I not accept that Moore is telling the truth when he said nothing ever happened? How is an accuser more reputable than the accused?
