RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

longer barrels usually mean higher speed, to a point.

If you want to shoot prarie dogs at long range you might think about a longer barrel, but I shot a 75gr amax to 1000 yards out of a 20" barrel.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I have the 20" model and it's great. Get the wylde (spelling?) chamber. Accuracy is NOT a problem either. Also, mine is 1:8 twist which I think is optimal for an AR.

Length? 24" is probably overkill unless you are shooting varmints exclusively.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I've got the 24" RRA Varmint in a 1-8" twist. Carry friendly, no. Off hand shooter, not really. Easy to balance, nope. Tight shooter from a supported position, yes. Get the most of the 223 Rem. caliber, yes. I have shot mine at night predator hunting, my spotter said all he saw was a mist, no flash at all. It burns ball powder clean and is very accurate. The extra weight is great for spotting hits with a varmint rifle, but at nearly 15lbs scoped, I find myself riding the ATV more than walking. I have a friend that had Dedicated Technologies do an aggressive flute and port job as well as cut his to 20" and he loves it. They started as identical rifles. Like BCP said, go Wylde and 1-8" twist. You won't regret it. You can always start 24" and cut it back as needed later easier than you can start 18" and grow

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I have a friend with a shorter barrel than that and it is very accurate. I would think the bigger diff between the short and long barrels would the re velocity.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I've had one for about eight years and I really like it. A friend has a White Oak upper with a 26" barrel and we have lots of long range fun. However, it is a specilized rifle. If you looking for a long range 5.56 for varmint hunting and target shooting get it. Mine has killed its weight in Prairie Dogs several time over. If it is going to be your only AR you might want to rethink it.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

PDD, it won't be my only AR. I have a Sig setup for CQC. Now I want a long distance shooter, which my Sig hasn't been overly successful at. I love it but I won't be driving tacks with it.

David, I have been looking at the Predator Pursuits too. It is a lb lighter. Is the only difference the thinner barrel?

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

Go for it. It is a quality 3/4 moa shooter. No challenge to get 77 or 75 grain reloads to exceed Mk262 velocity with N540. I saw my friend print a five inch group at 900 yards with my rifle. Even 45 grain varmint bullets shoot well in it with the right loads. Mine wears a 6.5X20 Leupold or Vortex depending on current scope shuffle.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

i know you are not looking for a .308 but i have The 20 inch RRA Predator hp. shot it for the first time today and love every thing about it. RRA make a very nice rifle.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I really like the RRA PP rifles.
24.5 grains of Varget and a 69 grain Nosler Custom Competition bullet in a Lake City case worked well for me.

Here is a Vid of one shooting at a orange piece of steel @ 1000 yards.
In the upper right have corner of the video you can see the bullet trace.
You can also make out the bullet breaking up on the steel
I think it took 37MOA up and 3.75Mil for wind

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I see they offer 2 different twist rates, and there seems to be uppers w/ flash hiders and with out. ARCOREY, you said get the wylde chamber, does that mean there are several chambering options?

I think all the RRA AR-15's have Wylde chambers. DPMS, Stag, Bushmaster and other brands don't offer it as standard from what I've seen.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

Ah, that makes sense. I have a Dennys Guns VCQB barrel with a Wylde chamber and that thing eats everything and shoots match ammo well. Seems to me it may be close to the ideal 5.56/.223 chamber.

Friend of mine has been wanting a cheap semi auto precision rifle. He started with a PSL, heh. Now I was suggesting something like the RRA varmint upper. Glad I stumbled across this thread confirming that they are good.

Re: RRA Varmint - 24" barrel worth it?

I have a 24" barrel on my RRA Varminter and like it. It's a rifle that will only be shot off a bipod and not carried much, so the extra length/weight isn't a concern, I want as much velocity as I can get. I also went with a 1:12 twist as I shoot almost exclusively 55 gr bullets with it.

I have the one in eight twist rifle and it is sub moa with Winchester White Box 45 grain JHP load. It is also sub moa with 26g W748 under a 55g Nosler BT. It will also shoot the 77 grain sub moa. Just saying don't shy away from the light bullets if you have the fast barrel. Some lightly constructed varmimt bullets won't take the faster twist but the Poly Tiped Varmint bullets and others have no problem.

+1 on what he said, my bread and butter load is a 50gr. V-max with 26 gr. Bl-C(2) and a CCI SRM primer seated to mag length for my 8 twist. The rifle and load shoot far better than I can. I've killed many a groundhog with that combination from point blank to 400+ yds. I've also had success with the same powder primer combo with the 40gr. V-max and the 55gr. V-max and the 55gr. Sierra BK's, they just didn't group quite as well as the 50's or give me the performance I wanted down range. My buddy that has the same rifle actually got the Barnes 36gr. Varmint grenades to shoot well in his with Benchmark. Fast twist does't eliminate the lightweight bullets at all
