ruger 10/22 500 budget

Like the title says if you had 500.00 to spend on a bare bones basic 10/22 and build a little tactical trainer what would you do? This budget does not include optics, rings, or base.

JTG is spot on in my book.
I have one with a 16" Clark barrel and Hogue stock. Awesome little rifle. Unbelievable with the Eotech. That setup makes anybody look like a hero.

Don't bed it. Mine will shoot in 3/4" at 50 yards using a pickup mirror for a rest shooting cheap Federal JHPs (this with an old 4x). The best thing about it is cold or warm barrel, the bullets go to the same place.

Thanks for your response, but I stated the budget didnt need to include rings, base, or scope.

I also already have the basic 10/22

I have the scope Vortex Diamondback, I have rings, and I have a tac solutions base. I need a barrel and stock and whatever little things that it may need.

I have also already taken the trigger apart and did some stone work and polishing and I also drilled and tapped the trigger for a over travel stop.


So What I have

I now have a 500.00 budget to complete it. I would prefer to stay away from anything Hogue.

What about a Tacticool from Boyds? or maybe even a B&C stock?

A hodge podge of 22 long ammo to see what the barrel likes.

No reason to swap the barrel until you know what it will do.
Every now and then a factory barrel will shoot decent.

Whistle Pig barrels with Wolf Match will shoot one hole groups at 50 yards all day at just under $200.

I'm swapping the little pencil barrel and stock for a couple of reasons.

1. The astectics are just plain horrible
2. It won't shoot worth a damn
3. I want to replicate or a least get close to setting it up like my larger rifles

As per the stock it would all depend on if you want Wood or Synthetic. Boyds, Revolution etc make some very nice wood stocks, in several different styles. If you are wanting to go Synthetic, unless you are looking at one of the injection molded stocks you basically can look at Bell & Carlson or McMillan.

I have a Bell & Carlson that is basically the same shape as a Ruger 10/22T Laminated Stock. All I had to do was remove the pressure point at the tip of the forend to make it shoot great. A buddy has a Bell & Carlson Anschutz Style Stock which has been a nightmare. It wasn't useable as he got it and he had to bed it with a Rimfire Technologies Bedding Kit.

My buddy just replaced his Bell & Carlson Anschutz Style Stock with a Nordic Components AR-22 Receiver Chassis, A2 Buttstock, CAA UPG-16 Pistol Grip and Delton Midlength Free Float Tube. So far he is really liking the change, which is yet another option for a stock. I have built a half dozen 10/22's for friends using the Nordic Compoents AR-22 Receiver Chassis. Each and every one of them shoots better than can be imagined. This is indeed a solid option if you want an AR Style 10/22.

As per the Barrel I have basically used Clark Custom Guns, Green Mountain and KIDD. All have been capable of MOA Groups at 100 yards with Wolf Match Target Ammo. Nut then I too have an old Butler Creek 20" Bull Barrel that will shoot between 1 MOA to 1 1/2 MOA at 100 yards also.

In regards to these barrels the Green Mountain will be the lowesst cost with the KIDD next in line and the Clark Custom Guns the highest cost (regarding 20" Stainless-Steel Bull Barrels).

I am in the process of building a Custom Ruger Charger Handgun and am quite certain it is going to end up with a KIDD Barrel on it.

In addition I would send off the bolt to one of the guys that does bolt work, Randy at CPC, Que etc. Get the headspace in the bolt set, pin the firing pin and chamfer / radius the rear face of the bolt. Most 10/22 Bolts I have personally measured generally have from .003 to .006" too much headspace.

That makes it easy then. Go with my option that has the Kidd Trigger and you will be under $500. That is how my rifle is set up. It shoots great, is lighter than stock, and is ultra reliable.

I know I'm probably too late, but I ran into this exact same situation about 8 months ago. I had gotten a 10/22 donor from my brother-in-law and didn't want to put too much money into it. Here's what I did:

Bell & Carlson Target/Varmint Stock from Stockys: $180
Hornet Custom B Trigger Group: $100
Tactical Solutions 16.5" barrel fluted unthreaded from MidwayUSA: $170
EGW 20moa picatinny rail: $50


All that would work for you except for the trigger group as you already have had a tune up job for your 10/22. You can replace that for a Harris bipod which I also am now running.

The stock has been a pleasure to use. The butt rides a bag incredibly well and the two front studs allowed me to connect a sling and bipod. Rarely do I get the opportunity to take it squirrel hunting but the sling option makes it easier. The stock is also very light which in addition to the flat forearm helps me with off hand shots.

The TacSol barrel has been very good to me. I've been able to hold 1 MOA out to 100yds fairly easily with Wolf Match Target and SK Standard Plus ammo. This was also with testing various pressure pad locations between the barrel and stock. I've put roughly 2500-3k rounds through it and it's still fun as hell. The barrel is also aluminum which keeps the overall system weight down significantly.

The canted picatinny rail as stated above is pretty much a must-have for extended distances. My 10/22 shoots the SK ammo at 997fps. With a 100yd zero I'm looking at 25+ MOA to get to 250yds. The scope you have might get you there, but it's something to consider. Especially as once you hit 250 I imagine you're gonna want to go to 300yds, 350, etc.

Stock: I'm not feeling any love for the factory carbine stock here. While I'll agree it's a shame in factory configeration adding some wood here, some bondo there, some sanding, butt pad and some paint results in a very cheap yet effective sporter style. Cheap and sporter are 2 of my favorite words when it comes to 10/22 stocks. If not into the work just get a Boyds.

Trigger: You did some polishing.....great. Are ya happy with it? If so fine but the first thing I do on any 10/22 is install a VQ hammer.

Barrel: I've put some thought into this one for I'm thinkin of doing a 10/22 extended range gun. Settled on a Green Mountain heavy taper. Think they are around 20" but I'd go for 22" if I could get one.

Bipod: Do yourself a favor and get one that swivels. I prefer the "S" model Harris's and my favorite one is the S25. At 12-25" they are short enough for using while prone, tall enough to use while sitting and kneeling.

I would go Green Mountain on the barrel, I don't think ER shaw or Clark can compare to them in my personal ruger 10/22 experiences.

Built a lot of 10/22 target shooters.

My choice was a Butler Greek Blued target barrel/stock combo, Volquartsen trigger group internals, Tasco rings on the Ruger factory grooved base, and the Tasco 6-24x42 Varmint/Target Mildot Scope.

I have no idea what it costs to do this these days, I just know that the various components are the best value I was able to find for the least money.

My remaining 10/22 target gun had these components, but was upgraded with a Kimber Barrel/Laminated stock set that cost me dearly, shoots just marginally better, and is no longer available. In essence, the main improvement was about appearance.

Pretty gun, shoots well, way too expensive, I'll keep it.
