I have a ruger 10/22 that I got not to long ago. I would like to into some longer range shooting but before I do I would like to get to know the gun first. So I would like to know if anyone hear has a red dot on there gun a how makes it. And also is the best way to get started. Thank you

What are you considering "longer range shooting?" IMO (and there are guys who will disagree and can back it up) I would prefer a magnified optic over a red-dot. I love my Aimpoint on my AR Carbine, but for true longer range consistant accuracy "I" consider a scope a must. Again, that is MY OPINION!!! LOL!
In addition to this site, try rimfirecentral.com and check out their sections on the 10/22. They have several sub-topics that break it down to specific parts of the 10/22 such as barrels, action, stocks, tactical style, etc... There is much that can be done to improve a stock 10/22 cheaply by doing it yourself.

I shoot my 10/22 at 200 yards all the time. In all honesty, for me I would not be able to shoot that far without some magnification. The red dot is great for fast acquisition but at best may be good to only 100 yards, beyond that I do not know if the red dot can give you the elevation needed to shoot further. I use a 3-9x40 bushnell.

Another thing about the red dot is thatr even with a small dot... say a 2 MOA Aimpoint... that covers 2" at 100 yards. Not exactly "precision."

i've got red dots on a shotgun and a revolver, but not on anything i plan on shooting (or seeing) past 50 yards. anything other than center mass is covered up by the dot.
i would like the dot on something that's going to be shorter than 50 yards, it's a nice tool to use to get on a target or multiple targets quickly. it's also nice to use at short range at night.
if you are thinking about any "long range" stuff a magnified is the way to go.
if your budget allows detachable rings, perhaps a picatinny rail that you can interchange the sighting systems depending on how you want to shoot that day.
if (when) i get another ruger, that's probably going to be i'll set it up.

Sorry JR I put the Primary Arms on my Shotgun.... I like magnification on my 10-22 as well.
In certain situtations I can see uses for a dot on a 10/22 though. For the price it's great to have as a spare.
